A new 122-room hotel has been envisioned for 37-10 24th Street in Astoria.<\/p>\n

The 13-story, 188-foot-tall development would encompass 45,898 square feet, according to permits<\/a> filed yesterday. Each floor will have about 12 hotel rooms; the 12th floor will hold a restaurant, and an open bar will be on the 13th level.<\/p>\n

The developer is Gurpal Cheema’s New Generation Development, which purchased the site in September 2012 for $3.3 million, according to public records. The developer filed demolition permits<\/a> for the existing one-story brick warehouse in February 2013, and the structure was leveled later that year.<\/p>\n

The site was formerly home to Jung Sun Laundry Corp., a large industrial laundry plant. The company cleaned linens for hospitals, restaurants and hotels, including the Algonquin and Trump International, according to a New York Times<\/a> report. In 2003, Jung Sun refused to sign an industry-wide contract providing for raises, and more than 100 of its workers went on strike (the laundry did agree to raise pay, nine hours after workers walked out).<\/p>\n
