Their thinking was the gas would burn off in a few days. In fact, because the terrain is so difficult to navigate (the\u00a0word tsingy translates into English as &#8220;where one cannot walk barefoot&#8221;)\u00a0most scientific expeditions to the area lead to the discovery of a new plant or animal.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lake Natron,\u00a0Tanzania<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/2013\/08\/surreal-places.html\/lake-natron-2\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-52549\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-52549\" alt=\"Lake Natron-2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Lake-Natron-2.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"679\" \/><em>Photo:\u00a0<\/em><\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/imgur.com\/AoXHE\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">imgur<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Colored a deep red from salt-loving organisms and algae,\u00a0Lake Natron is one of the most alkaline lakes in the world.
