{"id":213160,"date":"2021-02-03T19:51:41","date_gmt":"2021-02-04T00:51:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/?p=213160"},"modified":"2021-02-03T19:51:41","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T00:51:41","slug":"long-beach-armory-redevelopment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/news\/long-beach-armory-redevelopment","title":{"rendered":"Long Beach Armory redevelopment takes another step towards approval"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 id='pressboard-ad-sponsorship-tag' style='margin-bottom: 35px;'><\/h4><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/armory-arts-collective-hero.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[213160]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-213161\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/armory-arts-collective-hero.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1123\" height=\"649\" \/><\/a><em>Rendering: City of Long Beach<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Tuesday, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/longbeach.legistar.com\/View.ashx?M=F&amp;ID=9088345&amp;GUID=687D8951-9DD9-4D89-A455-AD0D0C7EEFC1\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long Beach City Council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> voted to enter into an exclusive negotiation agreement with Gundry Partners, LP and its partners Pacific 6 and St. Anthony High School to redevelop the Long Beach Armory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dubbed the Armory Arts Collective, the proposed project would include 86 market-rate and workforce housing units, a 7,043-square-foot performing arts center and gallery space, 11,400 square feet of offices, meeting rooms and studios, plus an 8,258-square-foot performing arts garden.<\/p>\n<p>The Armory\u2019s parking lot would be improved with a new construction housing complex consisting of studio and one-bedroom units, nearly half of which would be accessible to those earning 60 percent of the area\u2019s median income (AMI).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/armory-arts-collective.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[213160]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-213162\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/armory-arts-collective.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"593\" \/><\/a><em>Rendering: City of Long Beach<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Adaptive reuse and restoration have been proposed for the Armory building itself, which dates back to 1930 and was decommissioned in 2018. Showcasing Art Deco-style architecture, the vacant building at 854 East Seventh Street is owned by the City and is in need of extensive repairs. The creative venues and offices would be housed in this historically significant, three-story structure.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project has not yet been given the green light, however. The City and Armory Arts Collective\u2019s developers will have 180 days to reach an agreement. Sergio Ramirez, the deputy director of Long Beach\u2019s Economic Development Department, told the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstelegram.com\/2021\/02\/03\/proposal-to-redevelop-long-beach-armory-as-housing-performing-arts-complex-moves-forward\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Press-Telegram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that terms such as \u201caffordability levels, community benefits and aesthetic improvements\u201d are to be discussed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Once\u00a0the agreement has been finalized, Long Beach City Council will vote to approve or deny the development proposal.
