<\/a><\/p>\nPhotos: James Bombales<\/em><\/p>\n Situated at Yonge Street and Bloor Street West, The One Residences<\/a> by Mizrahi Developments<\/a> is an 85-storey residence now under construction in Toronto\u2019s Yorkville neighbourhood.<\/p>\n Once billed as the city\u2019s future tallest building when it was launched in 2017, The One has lost that title to Pinnacle One Yonge\u2019s<\/a> upcoming SkyTower<\/a> residence, located near the foot of Yonge Street. While it may no longer be the city\u2019s next tallest skyscraper, the Foster + Partners<\/a>-designed tower remains a major landmark in its own right.<\/p>\n Soaring 309 metres (1,014 feet) above Yonge and Bloor Streets, the project is located at one of the city\u2019s most iconic intersections. Before it was purchased by Mizrahi in 2014, 1 Bloor Street West was home to Stollerys, a menswear shop that called the site home for 114 years. Though the Stollerys building was being considered for heritage designation, it was controversially (but legally) demolished before a decision was made.<\/p>\n In order to build a project worthy of its prominent location, Mizrahi partnered with renowned architectural firm, Foster + Partners. Led by Sir Norman Foster, the British firm is known for designing the Gherkin in London, Hearst Tower in New York City, and the glass Reichstag dome in Berlin.<\/p>\n The One\u2019s architectural design features a unique exoskeleton consisting of an exterior casing made up of bronze diagonal trusses that climb up the length of the tower, providing much of the structural support. The advanced structural engineering and innovative design technique allows for uncontaminated interior spaces with maximum exposure to sunlight, and layouts that homebuyers can customize to suit their needs<\/p>\n An official groundbreaking ceremony for the development was held in 2017, followed by the start of excavation for the five-level underground parking garage. In November 2018, a specialized, heavy-duty crane was installed on site as construction began to move upwards.<\/p>\n Over the course of the following year, a maze of below-grade mega caissons and super columns were installed that will support the massive structure and connect to its exoskeleton. The building soon reached grade-level in late-2019 but work was forced to pause as a result of permit issues regarding the above-grade construction and the lockdowns caused by COVID-19. Once the necessary permits were approved and residential construction was permitted again by the provincial government, workers were back on site by summer 2020.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n
