As Canada\u2019s vacancy rates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/economy\/article-canadas-vacancy-rate-falls-for-third-year-as-tight-rental-market\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">dropped to their lowest level since 2002 in 2019<\/a>, 2.2 percent nationally, Toronto\u2019s rental vacancies climbed slightly from 1.1 percent to 1.5 percent. While these prospects sound grim for the future of the city\u2019s rental market, relief could be on the way.<\/p>\n<p>In January, Toronto-based real estate consultancy, Urbanation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/2020\/01\/toronto-new-rental-construction-highest-level-1970s.html\">reported a 43 percent increase<\/a> in rental development approval submissions in 2019, totaling 57,197 new rental units that could be delivered by the end of the year. Noted as the highest level of rental development in the last five years, the spike was associated with the provincial Progressive Conservative government\u2019s decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/2019\/02\/guide-understanding-doug-fords-major-overhaul-ontarios-rent-control-policies.html\">scrap rent control<\/a> measures on newly built or occupied rental units in November 2018.<\/p>\n\n<p>If you\u2019re hoping to sign on a new apartment this year, some of these purpose-built rental projects across Toronto may be what you\u2019re looking for.
