Millennials are taking cues from their maximalist grandparents, readily adopting a design style <\/span>House Beautiful<\/span><\/i> writer and editor Emma Bazilian recently dubbed \u2018Grandmillennial.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n Photo: Pixy Interiors for\u00a0Sweeten<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n Together, the sisters purchased and renovated a 700-square-foot apartment in a co-op building in Manhattan\u2019s storied Sutton Place neighborhood. \u201cWe knew exactly what we wanted for the space before we found the apartment,\u201d they say. \u201c[We] think a lot of people are surprised when they see the space because for two young girls, we have very traditional style.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n Photo: Pixy Interiors for\u00a0Sweeten<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n Working with <\/span>Sweeten<\/span><\/a>, a free service matching renovators with vetted general contractors, the DeChiricos rejigged the apartment\u2019s awkward layout, adding a second bedroom, spacious walk-in closet and a dining space to accommodate a four-seater table. \u201cWe went shopping at antique stores a year before we bought the apartment and had a number of items from our grandmother\u2019s house that we wanted incorporated into the space,\u201d they add. <\/span><\/p>\n Image: Courtesy of\u00a0Sweeten<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n To streamline the flow of traffic through the apartment, Daria and Deanna opted to knock down walls and eliminate unnecessary entry points. Four irregularly placed closets were condensed to two \u2014 a seven-by-ten-foot walk-in for the sisters\u2019 \u201cendless amounts of clothes\u201d and a pre-existing coat\/linen closet in the dining area. \u201cIt was the right move and we\u2019re so happy we kept it,\u201d they say . \u201cIt also created a great way to incorporate the mirrored doors we love and add extra light and depth to the space with just the use of mirrors.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n Photo: Pixy Interiors for\u00a0Sweeten<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n The dining area is primed for entertaining, wrapped in a floral Chinoiserie wallpaper by Thibaut. The wainscoting, chair rail and trim are painted out in a pale blue color and a crystal chandelier ups the glam factor. \u201cWe were very excited to finally have a dining room to sit and eat meals at \u2014 a luxury in NYC,\u201d they say.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Photo: Pixy Interiors for\u00a0Sweeten<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n \u201cWe tried to participate as much as possible in the process (i.e. painting, moving, putting things together) so that the place really felt like ours and our hard work paid off,\u201d they say. For the living room, they chose an energetic navy blue paint color from Benjamin Moore and versatile furniture pieces, like a pair of upholstered ottomans that can be used as extra seating. \u201cWe wanted people to be struck by the colors, textures and coziness of the space.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Photo: Pixy Interiors for\u00a0Sweeten<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n The kitchen utilizes clever solutions to maximize every square inch. The white quartz countertop wraps around a partition wall, creating a bar area with cabinets and a wine rack below. Daria and Deanna \u201cavoided a trendy cabinet style to ensure longevity in the look\u201d but selected an emerald green subway tile backsplash \u201cinspired by The Polo Bar,\u201d Ralph Lauren’s popular Midtown restaurant. <\/span><\/p>\n Photo: Pixy Interiors for\u00a0Sweeten<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n The sisters splurged and saved strategically in the apartment\u2019s only bathroom, choosing budget-friendly white subway tile for the shower surround and a luxe basketweave mosaic tile for the floor. \u201cIf you believe your new space won\u2019t be your ‘forever’ home, you can make it comfortable and custom while also choosing materials that will be appealing to potential buyers,\u201d says Jean Brownhill, founder and CEO of Sweeten.
