With its close proximity to Ocean Beach,\u00a0The Sunset is populated with surfer bros and artists, and the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment is on the low-end at $2,470, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zumper.com\/blog\/2017\/09\/san-francisco-neighborhood-prices-mapped-fall-2017\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zumper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>How did The Sunset become one of the most slept-on neighborhoods while retaining so much of its character? Twenty-nine crew members perished \u2014 the vessel had been on its way to the Arctic to hunt sperm whales.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Seabreeze Resort, 1897<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/sf-2-min.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[172937]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-172939\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/sf-2-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"497\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp4\/wnp4.0966.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[172937]\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OpenSFHistory \/ wnp4\/wnp4.0966.jpg<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once covered in sand dunes, development of The Sunset began in the 1870s and 1880s, largely thanks to the attention brought on by Golden Gate Park.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.outsidelands.org\/roberts.php\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western Neighborhoods Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Seabreeze Resort (shown above) had a checkered past. The public saltwater swimming pool was under construction, soon to become one of the largest heated outdoor swimming pools in the world until its closure in 1971.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Tornado House, 1930<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/sf-6-min.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[172937]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-172943\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/sf-6-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"967\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp30.0124.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[172937]\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OpenSFHistory \/ wnp30.0124.jpg<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Repaired and still standing today, the aptly named Tornado House was hit by turbulent winds on February 24, 1930.
