Business Insider <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/photos-of-excelsior-san-francisco-what-its-like-to-live-2017-9\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">profiled the sleepy district this month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, calling it \u201cone of the hottest housing markets in America.\u201d While that may be true, locals know it to be much more than just another Bay Area neighborhood on the cusp of gentrification. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>South of Bernal Heights and about a 10 minute drive away from the Mission, Excelsior is uniquely located near many urban delights, yet is still considered \u2018suburban\u2019 for San Francisco. Emanuel Lewis and his daughter Jeannette had the honor of naming the streets. Emanuel built and sold 200 houses in the area following the 1906 earthquake.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Excelsior Avenue and London Street, 1918<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/wnp36.01947-min.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[171639]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-171643\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/wnp36.01947-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"751\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp36.01947.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[171639]\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OpenSFHistory \/ wnp36.01947.jpg<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, some of those names were unfortunately changed.
