The term \u201cVictorian\u201d simply means that the residence was built during Queen Victoria\u2019s reign (1837-1901). The temporary structure was 435 feet tall and covered in more than 100,000 glass faceted \u201cjewels\u201d that glittered spectacularly in the sunlight. Spreckels and his wife, Alma.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Adolph B. Spreckels was 27, he shot the previously mentioned Michael H. de Young, but was acquitted after pleading temporary insanity. He also donated the California Palace of the Legion of Honor during his last year of life. Today, the famous romance novelist Danielle Steel resides in Spreckels Mansion.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Whittier Mansion, 1972<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-168990\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/sf-13-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"680\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp25.2462.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[168977]\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OpenSFHistory \/ wnp25.2462.jpg<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This 30-room masterpiece at 2090 Jackson Street was constructed with steel-reinforced brick walls and a facing of Arizona red sandstone.
