The fair shaped the campus landmarks, creating Rainier Vista and Drumheller Fountain. A month later, the beginnings of the first territorial University building was laid. This campus was used until 1894. Today, it is currently the site of the Fairmont Olympic Hotel on University Street in downtown Seattle. Saunders constructed the building from Enumclaw sandstone and pressed brick, with terra cotta details in a single year. According to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.historylink.org\/File\/2565\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HistoryLink<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by September 1895, Denny Hall&#8217;s 35 rooms were opened to a 200-person student body. He decided to make a new library building one of his top priorities. Gould, Sr. and Charles H. Bebb. The people depicted include Moses, Louis Pasteur, Dante, Shakespeare, Plato, Benjamin Franklin, Justinian, Sir Isaac Newton, Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo,Goethe, Herodotus, Adam Smith, Homer, Gutenberg, Beethoven, Darwin and Grotius. His three-volume history of American letters, Main Currents in American Thought, won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1928.<\/p>\n<h2>Old Meany Hall, 1909<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/uw-8-min.png\" rel=\"lightbox[166458]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-166470\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/uw-8-min-1024x613.png\" alt=\"uw-8-min\" width=\"1024\" height=\"613\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cdm16118.contentdm.oclc.org\/cdm\/fullbrowser\/collection\/p15015coll4\/id\/1238\/rv\/singleitem\/rec\/1\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seattle Public Library <\/span><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyuw.com\/news\/article_543d7526-607a-5950-8b0b-feccc0761263.html\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meany Hall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> building was situated between Memorial Way and 15th Avenue, directly across from Suzzallo Library. The architects for the original building were Howard &amp; Galloway, and it was built for a cost of $181,000. From 1909 to 1965, Meany had the largest capacity of any building on campus with 2,600 seats. It originally served as an athletic arena where boxing matches and other competitions were held. Olmsted, University of Washington students now enjoy a full symmetrical view of Mt. Rainier on clear Seattle days.
