But the payoff is worth the trip. Out there you\u2019ll find the slowed down bustle of mom and pop shops, a salty fresh breeze from the ocean, and the sprawling Golden Gate Park (neat fact \u2014 it\u2019s larger than New York City\u2019s Central Park).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Richmond district used to be sand dunes as far as the eye could see up until the late 19th century. Since then, it\u2019s grown up into a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diverse <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">residential neighborhood with some of the best Chinese and Russian cuisine in the city. Explore its rich history below, and don\u2019t forget to take a trip to see it for yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sand dunes on the horizon at Ocean Beach, circa 1870<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/richmond-1-compressed.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[165530]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-165531\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/richmond-1-compressed.jpg\" alt=\"richmond 1-compressed\" width=\"750\" height=\"506\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp4\/wnp4.0766.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[165530]\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OpenSFHistory \/ wnp4\/wnp4.0766.jpg<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1868, San Francisco\u2019s Board of Supervisors passed the Outside Lands Ordinances, which set aside land in the Richmond district for parks, schools, fire stations and a cemetery, with the hope that the city would continue to expand west<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ward<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Richmond district is actually named after a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. One of the area\u2019s first residents, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an Australian immigrant named<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> George Turner Marsh<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, called his home \u201cthe Richmond House,\u201d and the name stuck.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Troops waiting for deployment to the Philippines, 1898<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/richmond-2-compressed.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[165530]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-165532\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/richmond-2-compressed.jpg\" alt=\"richmond 2-compressed\" width=\"961\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp24.0164a.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[165530]\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OpenSFHistory \/ wnp24.0164a.jpg<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Situated between Point Lobos Avenue (Geary Boulevard) and Fulton Street, between Arguello and Sixth, Camp Merritt deployed 18,000 troops to the Philippines <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during the Spanish-American War<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remaining troops were later moved north to The Presidio in August of 1898.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>A home near Mountain Lake, circa 1899<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/richmond-3-compressed.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[165530]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-165533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/richmond-3-compressed.jpg\" alt=\"richmond 3-compressed\" width=\"1000\" height=\"612\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp15.207.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[165530]\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OpenSFHistory \/ wnp15.207.jpg<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up until 1906, development in the Richmond district was slow.
