From 1950 to 1960, the population increased by 89,496, or 20 percent to 557,087. More housing was constructed to accommodate the\u00a0growing population, and the boundaries of settlement\u00a0in the city and began to move north.\u00a0Land was abundant so most of the development was in single-family houses. Construction of the I-90 bridge began in 1940 and was paid off by 1949. The hole measured 60 feet deep, 120 feet wide and 200 feet long. The total cost of repairing the cave-in was $2 million. But according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historylink.org\/File\/8127\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.historylink.org\/File\/8127&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1487427025676000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF7waM9If80_wKmcNVjaW_dnoxysA\" class=\"external\">HistoryLink,<\/a> before long, the power shovel got stuck in the mud, and a tractor and crane had to yank it out. It was not a glamorous start to the project, but work proceeded, and by July 1951, the first segment of the viaduct (from Battery to Pike Street) had been completed.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Houses on 30th Avenue
