A week before the first settlers arrived at Alki Point, Luther Collins and several other people\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.historylink.org\/File\/2975\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">claimed land<\/a> in what is now Seattle&#8217;s Georgetown neighborhood. The year was 1851, and Georgetown\u00a0had taken its\u00a0first step to\u00a0becoming the bustling cultural hub it is today.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Seattle and Walla Walla Railroad, 1877<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/walla-walla-railroad.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[161897]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-161909\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/walla-walla-railroad.jpg\" alt=\"walla walla railroad\" width=\"833\" height=\"603\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cdm16118.contentdm.oclc.org\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/p15015coll4\/id\/2418\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seattle Public Library<\/span><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On May 1st, 1874, 300 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historylink.org\/File\/2975\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">Seattle residents started building<\/a> the Seattle and Walla Walla Railroad at Steele&#8217;s Landing in Georgetown.<\/span>\u00a0It wasn&#8217;t long before Georgetown became a hotspot for revelers from Seattle \u2014 by 1908, it\u00a0was known as &#8220;the cesspool of Seattle&#8221; and had\u00a0as many as 24 saloons operating 24 hours a day.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Maple School, ca.\u00a01907<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/maple-school.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[161897]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-161904\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/maple-school.jpg\" alt=\"maple school\" width=\"829\" height=\"652\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/cdm16118.contentdm.oclc.org\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/p15015coll4\/id\/2336\/rec\/30\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">Seattle Public Library<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 1865, a school was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattleschools.org\/UserFiles\/Servers\/Server_543\/File\/District\/Departments\/Records%20and%20Archives\/Building%20for%20Learning\/maple.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">built in\u00a0Georgetown<\/a> on land donated by Samuel Maple, one of the area&#8217;s original settlers. It was the first hospital in the area. After 14 months, the sisters moved to a different hospital in Seattle, and the County Poor Farm closed. It\u00a0reopened in 1890, and in 1893 a new three-story hospital was completed in the area. The County Poor Farm continued to operate just upstream as a shelter for the destitute.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Georgetown Public Library in the Old Georgetown City Hall building, 1940 <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/public-library.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[161897]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-161905\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/public-library-807x1024.jpg\" alt=\"public library\" width=\"807\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/cdm16118.contentdm.oclc.org\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/p15015coll4\/id\/1276\/rec\/2\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">Seattle Public Library<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>On March 29th, 1910, Georgetown voters <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historylink.org\/File\/2975\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">chose to be annexed<\/a> by Seattle. The vote came just nine months after the completion of the new Georgetown City Hall; it\u00a0later became a police station, a fire station and a public library.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Boeing Plant 2, 1953<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/boeing-plant.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[161897]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-161900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/boeing-plant-1024x625.jpg\" alt=\"boeing plant\" width=\"1024\" height=\"625\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/cdm16118.contentdm.oclc.org\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/p16118coll11\/id\/2347\/rec\/24\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">Seattle Public Library<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 1935, the Boeing Company opened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/2016\/05\/seattle-boeing-plant.html\" target=\"_blank\">Boeing Plant 2<\/a> on the west side of Boeing Field. By the end of World War II, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historylink.org\/File\/2975\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">6,981 B-17 bombers<\/a> had been produced there. At peak production, the facility operated three shifts seven days a week, and employed thousands of workers.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Malt, Rainier and Bottling Works, 1966<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/bottling-works.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[161897]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-161901\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/bottling-works.jpg\" alt=\"bottling works\" width=\"849\" height=\"661\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cdm16118.contentdm.oclc.org\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/p16118coll11\/id\/148\/rec\/2\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seattle Public Library<\/span><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1883, John Clausen and Edward Sweeny <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historylink.org\/File\/2975\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">built a brewery<\/a> that 10 years later became the Seattle Brewing and Malting Company. The complex eventually covered five acres and became the world&#8217;s sixth-largest brewery. Germans and Belgians made up much of the workforce and surrounding\u00a0community. Much further into the future, the\u00a0brewery was bought and transformed into\u00a0Rainier Beer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Wooden railroad overpass, 1966<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/railroad-overpass.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[161897]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-161906\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/railroad-overpass-1024x653.jpg\" alt=\"railroad overpass\" width=\"1024\" height=\"653\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/cdm16118.contentdm.oclc.org\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/p16118coll11\/id\/142\/rec\/6\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">Seattle Public Library<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Industrial development dominated Georgetown\u00a0after World War II. Its\u00a0library closed in 1948, and its\u00a0movie theater closed in 1952. Then, when\u00a0Interstate 5 was completed in 1962, most business activity in the area <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historylink.org\/File\/7196\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">shut down entirely<\/a>. Georgetown School, which opened in 1898, experienced a 91 percent turnover rate\u00a0in a single school year and closed in 1970.<\/p>\n<h2><b>The Hamilton building, 1966<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/the-hamilton.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[161897]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-161908\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/the-hamilton-1024x652.jpg\" alt=\"the hamilton\" width=\"1024\" height=\"652\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cdm16118.contentdm.oclc.org\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/p16118coll11\/id\/151\/rec\/11\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seattle Public Library<\/span><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Between 1900 and 1910, Georgetown&#8217;s population increased from 1,913 to about 7,000. As industry and businesses grew, immigrant families settled near its factories and other places of employment. Legend has it that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattle.gov\/parks\/find\/parks\/oxbow-park\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">Elvis pumped gas<\/a> for his Cadillac at the Hat \u2018n\u2019 Boots while filming &#8220;It <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Happened at the World\u2019s Fair&#8221; in Seattle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1963.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Rainier Brewery, 2007<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/rainier-brewing.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[161897]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-161907\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/rainier-brewing-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"rainier brewing\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Rainier_Brewery_04A.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[161897]\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Mabel<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Interstate 5 was completed, motorists could see little of Georgetown except for the 12-foot-tall red &#8220;R&#8221; on\u00a0Rainier Brewery. The &#8220;R&#8221; was replaced in 2000 by the great green &#8220;T&#8221; of Tully&#8217;s Coffee, and the brewery is now a coffee roasting plant. Georgetown itself has experienced a revival since the 1990s and today &#8220;has mastered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitseattle.org\/neighborhoods\/sodo-georgetown\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">bohemian blue-collar chic<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id='pressboard-ad-sponsorship-msg'><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Once called the &#8220;cesspool of Seattle,&#8221;
