Alternatively, if you\u2019re looking to offload household furniture, a well-written listing with clear photos could put extra cash in your pocket. Follow these easy tips for buying and selling your furniture online and you\u2019ll be scoring deals in no time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Buy<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check off the \u2018has images\u2019 box on the left side of the page. Do not waste your time wading through unhelpful or potentially scam-ridden posts. On Craigslist, make sure you are viewing the listings in gallery mode rather than list.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Original photos are always preferable to commercial photos. It takes time and patience to sift through these listings, but somewhere out there is a Hans Wegner Easy Chair listed as a \u201cChair with Wood Frame.\u201d <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set up email alerts to be among the first to know when an item you\u2019re searching for goes on sale. On Craigslist, you can do so by clicking \u2018save search,\u2019 which is located to the right of the search bar. Check the box to turn email notifications on or off for your query. On Kijiji, simply click \u2018Register for Kijiji Alerts,\u2019 located near the top of the page, after searching for the keyword.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve found the furniture piece you\u2019re interested in purchasing, write a brief, but friendly message to the seller. A dusty, overcrowded bookshelf is not a hot ticket item.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take fantastic photos using a DSLR. Ask to borrow one from a friend if you don\u2019t own one. Always take photos during daylight hours and ensure that your subject is properly lit. If you need to, bring in extra floor lamps to bounce light off the ceiling, and never photograph an item against a window. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On that note, stage your items to make them more visually appealing. Add a few throw pillows to a couch or set a dining table as you would for a meal. Just remember to state in your post that these decorative accents are not included. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clean up the background of your photos. We\u2019ve been over this, but \u201cCasalife \u2018Citizen\u2019 Italian leather armchair\u201d is far more searchable than \u201cdesigner chair.\u201d <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Include lots of details in your listing. If you do not, you will be bombarded with questions from confused prospective buyers. For furniture, it\u2019s important to mention why you are selling the item, its dimensions, if it is from a non-smoking household, if you own pets, if there is any damage to the item, if you\u2019re willing to negotiate the price and the approximate pickup location (please don\u2019t give away your home address, a neighborhood will suffice).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not try to be witty in your post. Prospective buyers are searching through hundreds of posts, and they do not think it\u2019s funny that, \u201cThis arm chair [sic] fits only elegant bums of aristocratic descent\u201d (actual <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kijiji.ca\/v-chair-recliner\/city-of-toronto\/beautiful-armchair-for-a-beautiful-person\/1230616909?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kijiji post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do your research before deciding on a price. Again, look at similar listings or check out how much it costs to buy the item new. The prospective buyer is likely shooting off emails to multiple sellers and if you\u2019re the first to respond, you\u2019re more likely to make a sale.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You do not have to sell to just anyone. Use your best judgement, especially if the buyer will be picking up furniture from your house. It\u2019s okay to tell a little white lie, \u201cSorry, the couch is no longer available,\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m already in talks with another buyer, but if the sale falls through I\u2019ll let you know.\u201d <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And finally, only accept cash or PayPal. There are a lot of scammers out there and you don\u2019t want to be played for a fool.
