That’s the message that currently appears on the homepage for Grady Ranch<\/a>, a 224-unit affordable housing project planned by George Lucas \u2014 yes, that George Lucas \u2014 on land he owns in\u00a0Marin County, California. He first announced the $150-million development\u00a0a year and a half ago, but now\u00a0questions are being raised about whether it will actually happen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Those questions aren’t unwarranted. Though\u00a0public hearings were expected to take place midway through this year, as yet there has been no update. What’s more, while Lucas’ charitable idea has\u00a0garnered some praise<\/a>, some of his wealthy neighbors are opposed to it.\u00a0According to the Marin Independent Journal<\/a>, they\u00a0have threatened to sue Lucas due to concerns about some components of the project, including a $70-million creek and watershed improvement.<\/p>\n

If the project ever does reach completion, it would be the\u00a0largest privately financed affordable housing project in the country. Local workers and\u00a0senior citizens would reside there, with 120 units being reserved for workers\u00a0earning between $65,700 and $101,400 a year (about 80 percent of the area median income).\u00a0The 240-acre property would\u00a0also have plenty of open space, as well as\u00a0a community center, micro-farm, orchards and barns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the apparent uncertainty surrounding Grady Ranch, those wanting to live on the property\u00a0can still fill out an interest form\u00a0here<\/a>.\u00a0Qualified applicants will have to undergo an extensive criminal background check and provide\u00a0references from former landlords. We’ll definitely be staying tuned for any updates.<\/span><\/p>\n
