After oil was discovered nearby in 1947, the city\u2019s population ballooned, rising from 100,000 in 1947 to 325,000 in 1965. While some tall buildings are visible, the city\u2019s changing face is largely hidden. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, North Hill itself did soon see some significant changes. Three years after the photo above was taken, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/northhillcentre.com\/contact-us\/centre-history\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calgary\u2019s first shopping mall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was built on North Hill. Called North Hill Shopping Centre, the complex was designed as a strip centre anchored by a Simpson-Sears department store. In 1973, the mall was transformed into an enclosed building, and in 2000 another major renovation brought the addition of more shops and services. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>McDougall School, 1952<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/calgary-1950s-mcdougall-school.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[157977]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-158007\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/calgary-1950s-mcdougall-school-1024x752.jpg\" alt=\"calgary 1950s mcdougall school\" width=\"1024\" height=\"752\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/contentdm.ucalgary.ca\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/roads\/id\/2012\/rec\/734\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Calgary Archives<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Completed in 1908, the building above <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.historicplaces.ca\/en\/rep-reg\/place-lieu.aspx?id=9203\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">originally served<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as Alberta\u2019s first normal school, a training centre for soon-to-be teachers. By 1922, it had been purchased by the Calgary Board of Education and reborn as McDougall School, an elementary and junior high school \u2014 it played that role until 1981, when it was decommissioned due to falling enrollment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the building is known as McDougall Centre and is a hub for provincial politics in Calgary. It wasn\u2019t long before it was the cultural centre of the city, playing host to a huge number of educational and arts groups, from the Calgary Women\u2019s Literary Club to the Calgary Natural History Society. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time the above photo was taken, the Calgary Public Library was still the city\u2019s main library. It lost that distinction in 1963, when the six-storey W.R. The land it sits on was donated by Canada\u2019s federal government, and the park itself was designed to look like <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.calgary.ca\/CSPS\/Parks\/Pages\/Locations\/Downtown-parks\/Central-Memorial-Park.aspx\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a formal Victorian garden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 features include geometric pathways, elaborate flower beds and rows of imported and native trees. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although they aren\u2019t visible in the photo above, Memorial Park is home to several monuments, including a cenotaph, statues commemorating World War I and the Boer War and a memorial honoring Richard Bedford Bennett, Canada\u2019s 11th prime minister. Opened in 1890, it was located in a two-storey frame house \u2014 in fact, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cdm16114.contentdm.oclc.org\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/p280501coll7\/id\/1464\/rec\/11\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to The Calgary Herald<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it didn\u2019t even have an operating room. When necessary, staff simply used the dining room. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsurprisingly, the city soon found it needed a larger hospital, and the facility was moved to a larger building in 1895. After the move, the original hospital building became a residence. Calgary\u2019s city council provided a bigger location for the branch in 1955, and building officially began in 1958 \u2014\u00a0in the photo above, the Arts and Education and Science and Engineering buildings are under construction. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work at the new site was completed in 1960, and in 1966 the branch gained autonomy from the University of Alberta, becoming the University of Calgary. But back in 1958 the company was a little newer \u2014 it <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.loblaw.ca\/en\/about-us\/history.html\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had only just been incorporated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and was preparing to launch a stamp-based customer loyalty program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The photo above was taken from Devenish Apartments, a complex with 57 three- and five-bedroom homes. Originally called the Calgary Collegiate Institute, it opened in September 1908 with 120 students and four university-educated staff. After failing to strike it rich, he headed north and eventually settled with his wife and children about four miles from the confluence of Calgary\u2019s Elbow and Bow rivers. There he turned his full attention to farming. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The photo above is a 1958 shot of one the buildings that the Livingston family lived in. In the 1950s, Eaton\u2019s was still thriving in the city, and a large addition was made to its north side. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wondering about the Union Jack flags pictured above? The store was decorated for a royal visit from Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. While in town, they visited the Calgary Stampede, where the queen reportedly <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.calgaryherald.com\/sports\/1950s+calgary+booming+stampede+with+gallery\/6646486\/story.html\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">handled herself regally<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even in the face of dirt, wind and noise. <\/span><\/p>\n<div
