At $7.5 million,\u00a01960 San Antonio Avenue, or the\u00a0<\/span>John Hopkins Spring Estate<\/span><\/a>, is the most expensive property currently on the market in Berkeley. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Modeled after<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Empress Elisabeth of Austria\u2019s <\/span>Achilleion Palace<\/span><\/a> in Corfu, Greece, the sprawling mansion\u00a0lies on 3.25 acres in the Southampton area of the Berkeley Hills. Ripe with redwood, eucalyptus, pine and palm trees \u2014 as well as a reflecting pool \u2014 the massive estate is also home to\u00a0<\/span>1984 San Antonio Avenue and 639 Arlington Avenue.<\/span><\/p>\n The mansion is huge, with seven bedrooms and six and a half bathrooms, but the star of the estate is without a doubt its atrium, which features an Italian fountain and sweeping 15-foot-wide staircases.<\/p>\n The massive home was built in 1912 for\u00a0John Hopkins Spring, a Bay Area entrepreneur who opened the very first department store in San Francisco \u2014 the City of Paris in Union Square.\u00a0Designed by John Hudson Thomas, the property\u00a0has a Beaux Arts-style exterior; its 12,000-square-foot interior features\u00a0Vienna Secession and Egyptian motifs.<\/p>\n More recently, the property was made\u00a0a City of Berkeley landmark in 2000.
