The already growing city continued to expand as building regulations loosened, and today\u2019s well-known skyline began to take shape. The popular destination has seen many changes over the years, including a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hbcheritage.ca\/hbcheritage\/history\/social\/CustomerExperience\/malldev\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1962 conversion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that made it Canada\u2019s first covered shopping centre. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/shopparkroyal.com\/about\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today it\u2019s billed as<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cMetro Vancouver\u2019s premiere shopping experience.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip arriving at City Hall, 1951<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/vancouver-1950s-city-hall.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[155240]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-155275\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/vancouver-1950s-city-hall-1024x714.jpg\" alt=\"vancouver 1950s city hall\" width=\"1024\" height=\"714\" \/><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/searcharchives.vancouver.ca\/view-of-h-r-h-princess-elizabeth-and-h-r-h-philip-duke-of-edinburgh-arriving-at-city-hall\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City of Vancouver Archives<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will soon be visiting Canada, and fans of the monarchy are getting excited \u2014\u00a0though probably not as excited as Canadians were for Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip\u2019s month-long cross-country trip in 1951. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/princess-elizabeth-s-1951-royal-visit-to-canada-1.1061794\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the CBC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201ccities strove to be the most enthusiastic,\u201d with Toronto vastly outdoing Quebec and Ottawa combined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The west coast leg of the couple\u2019s tour included a stop in Victoria to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfb.ca\/film\/royal_journey\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">watch First Nations dances<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as an excursion to see a university football game in Vancouver. On the right are a parking garage and the Ambassador Hotel. While fried delicacies and agricultural exhibits are still mainstays, parades like the one shown in this 1953 photo are no longer part of the experience. Playland, now a popular amusement park adjacent to the PNE, was also not in the picture at the time \u2014\u00a0it didn\u2019t open until 1958. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, the parade was held on Burrard Street near Pender Street, not particularly close to the PNE grounds at Hastings Park. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Celebration outside the Hotel Vancouver, 1955<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/vancouver-1950s-hotel.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[155240]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-155258\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/vancouver-1950s-hotel-1024x818.jpg\" alt=\"vancouver 1950s hotel\" width=\"1024\" height=\"818\" \/><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/searcharchives.vancouver.ca\/crowds-celebrating-in-street-in-front-of-hotel-vancouver-after-grey-cup-game\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City of Vancouver Archives<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hotel Vancouver, located in the heart of downtown and now branded as the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, is the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairmont.com\/hotel-vancouver\/hotel-history\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">third hotel in the city<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to go by that name. Now a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/standrewswesley.com\/about\/#church-history\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">designated heritage building<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it was designed by Twizel and Twizel and built between 1927 and 1933 using Nelson Island granite and Haddington Island stone. The church\u2019s stained glass windows include both traditional leaded glass and more recent dalle de verre. It was built in the Edwardian Baroque style, which combines French and English influences, and underwent a restoration in the mid-1980s. The 1950s saw major zoning changes and technological advances, and as a result cheaper and better multi-storey buildings began to be constructed. From 1962 to 1975 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/vancouver.ca\/news-calendar\/west-end.aspx\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over 220 high-rises<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were built in the area. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Vancouver General Hospital under construction, 1956<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/vancouver-1950s-hospital.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[155240]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-155257\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/vancouver-1950s-hospital-1024x835.jpg\" alt=\"vancouver 1950s hospital\" width=\"1024\" height=\"835\" \/><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/searcharchives.vancouver.ca\/job-no-794-acute-block-vanc-gen-hospital-vancouver-b-c-30\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City of Vancouver Archives<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vancouver General Hospital has come a long way since its <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/searcharchives.vancouver.ca\/vancouver-general-hospital-12\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first iteration as a CPR tent hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1886. Not long after that it became a nine-bed wooden structure on Powell Street between Hawkes Avenue and Heatley Avenue, and by 1906 it had been moved to its current location on Broadway. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1959, the hospital\u2019s new Centennial Pavilion was opened. Named to commemorate the centennial of the founding of BC as a British colony, the development was the largest part of the hospital at the time it was built. Shown under construction above is the pavilion\u2019s acute block. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Second Narrows Bridge under construction, 1956 or 1957<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/vancouver-1950s-second-narrows.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[155240]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-155261\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/vancouver-1950s-second-narrows-1024x665.jpg\" alt=\"vancouver 1950s second narrows\" width=\"1024\" height=\"665\" \/><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/searcharchives.vancouver.ca\/second-narrows-bridge-under-construction\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City of Vancouver Archives<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Second Narrows Bridge, which spans the Burrard Inlet and connects Vancouver to the North Shore, was also under construction in the 1950s. Built to replace an existing \u2014 but problematic \u2014\u00a0bridge across the inlet, the new bridge quickly had issues of its own. In June 1958, when construction was still taking place, two spans of the bridge collapsed into the water, killing 19 men. Today the accident remains the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca\/en\/article\/second-narrows-bridge-collapse\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worst industrial disaster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the history of Vancouver <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Vancouver International Airport, 1957<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/vancouver-1960s-airport.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[155240]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-155265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/vancouver-1960s-airport-1024x810.jpg\" alt=\"vancouver 1960s airport\" width=\"1024\" height=\"810\" \/><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/searcharchives.vancouver.ca\/aerial-view-of-vancouver-international-airport\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City of Vancouver Archives<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vancouver International Airport is currently Canada\u2019s second-busiest airport, but this 1957 photo offers few hints of its exciting future \u2014\u00a0the runways are empty and the scene looks downright placid. Even so, the airport was much bigger in the 50s than it was when it opened in 1931, with additions that decade including a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TRGn5p1IVkQ\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new terminal and control tower<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div
