have begun to crop up in recent years, and the city\u2019s planning department has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/toronto\/torontos-chief-planner-seeks-ways-to-develop-the-avenues\/article7348827\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">vocal about encouraging this to continue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, although a streetcar line has traversed at least part of the avenue\u2019s western stretch since the earlier part of last century, the area abutting it has been predominantly low- and mid-rise for much of its history.<\/p>\n<p>As part of our ongoing then-and-now series \u2014 which also includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/2015\/06\/the-junction-history-toronto.html\">The Junction<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/2015\/04\/then-and-now-midtown-toronto-history.html\">midtown Yonge Street<\/a> \u2014 we\u2019ve lined up James Bombales&#8217; present-day photos of St.
