The decade was also a time of change \u2014 more women began working in factories, and\u00a0the Fillmore\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saw an explosive increase of African Americans from the South.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The photos below show how populous San Francisco\u00a0was getting in the 1940s and<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0depict what life was like in\u00a0the city as conflict raged around the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>6th Street and Market Street, 1940<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SF-1940s-6th-market.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[154597]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-154598\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SF-1940s-6th-market.jpg\" alt=\"SF 1940s 6th market\" width=\"1000\" height=\"778\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a rel=\"nobox\" href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp32.0092.jpg\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">OpenSFHistory\/wnp32.0092.jpg<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Based on the pedestrian and automobile confusion shown in the photo above, it&#8217;s clear some things never change \u2014\u00a0Market Street, currently a major thoroughfare in downtown San Francisco, was also incredibly\u00a0busy in the 1940s.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Valencia Street and Market Street, 1940<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SF-1940s-valencia-market.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[154597]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-154609\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SF-1940s-valencia-market.jpg\" alt=\"SF 1940s valencia market\" width=\"1000\" height=\"759\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a rel=\"nobox\" href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp14.3179.jpg\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">OpenSFHistory\/wnp14.3179.jpg<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This expansive view captures a huge traffic jam along Market Street.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Little Hollywood, 1940<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-154601\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SF-1940s-little-hollywood.jpg\" alt=\"SF 1940s little hollywood\" width=\"1000\" height=\"584\" \/><em>Photo: <a rel=\"nobox\" href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp14.3461.jpg\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">OpenSFHistory\/wnp14.3461.jpg<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Little Hollywood, which still exists today, is a tiny San Francisco neighborhood that\u00a0popped up in the 1920s and 1930s. Many of the houses there are similar in style to homes in Southern California, and that&#8217;s where the area got its name.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Solitary polar bear at the Fleishhacker Zoo, 1940<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SF-1940s-zoo.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[154597]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-154610\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SF-1940s-zoo.jpg\" alt=\"SF 1940s zoo\" width=\"1000\" height=\"585\" \/><\/a><i><em>Photo: <a rel=\"nobox\" href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp28.0760.jpg\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">OpenSFHistory\/wnp28.0760.jpg<\/a><\/em><\/i><\/p>\n<p>The San Francisco Zoo was originally named the Fleishhacker Zoo after Herbert Fleishhacker, president of the San Francisco Parks Commission. Fleishhacker built a saltwater pool also named after himself across the street from the zoo, and it\u00a0later fell into disrepair and was destroyed by a fire in 2012. The San Francisco Zoo now uses that space as\u00a0an additional parking lot.<\/p>\n<h2><b>MacArthur Tunnel, 1940<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SF-1940s-macarthur-tunnel.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[154597]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-154602\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SF-1940s-macarthur-tunnel.jpg\" alt=\"SF 1940s macarthur tunnel\" width=\"1000\" height=\"539\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a rel=\"nobox\" href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp28.0267.jpg\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">OpenSFHistory\/wnp28.0267.jpg<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Completed in the 1940s, the MacArthur Tunnel is located in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/2016\/07\/presidio-san-francisco-understated-gem.html\">the Presidio<\/a> and is\u00a0a direct link between Park Presidio Boulevard and Lake Street.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Sutro Baths main tank, ca.\u00a01940<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SF-1940s-sutro-baths.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[154597]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-154608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SF-1940s-sutro-baths.jpg\" alt=\"SF 1940s sutro baths\" width=\"750\" height=\"590\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a rel=\"nobox\" href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp4\/wnp4.0321.jpg\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">OpenSFHistory\/wnp4\/wnp4.0321.jpg<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now in ruins, the Sutro Baths used to be a privately owned saltwater bathhouse located near the Cliff House restaurant. Before the facility\u00a0burned down and closed in 1966, it\u00a0included an ice skating rink, a 2,700-seat amphitheater, six saltwater pools, seven slides and 30 gymnastic swinging rings.<\/p>\n<h2>Sutro Baths Streetcar Depot, 1940<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-154607\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/SF-1940s-streetcar-depot.jpg\" alt=\"SF 1940s streetcar depot\" width=\"1000\" height=\"663\" \/><em>Photo: <a rel=\"nobox\" href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp14.1472.jpg\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">OpenSFHistory\/wnp14.1472.jpg<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>There used to be a streetcar depot curling around the coast near the former Sutro Baths location. Behind the photographer would have been Playland-at-the-Beach, an amusement park that was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/2016\/05\/san-francisco-1970s.html\">demolished in the 1970s<\/a>. The Haight Orchestra would often accompany\u00a0films with live music.
