With the 6.9-magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake and the AIDS epidemic sweeping\u00a0the city, it was a time for community activism and strength.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explore the 12 photos below from a decade that was both whimsical and tragic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Market Street and 5th Street, 1985<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-152978\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/SF-1980s-1.jpg\" alt=\"SF 1980s 1\" width=\"1000\" height=\"673\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo: <a rel=\"nobox\" href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp25.1599.jpg\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">OpenSFHistory\/wnp25.1599.jpg<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/Edward-Goldstein-noted-S-F-jeweler-2637452.php\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SFGate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Diamond Palace, pictured above, \u201cwas a San Francisco institution that traced its origins back to 1850 when it catered to miners and other pioneers who had struck it rich in the Gold Rush.\u201d The family-owned business closed in 1990, and now the San Francisco Shopping Center has taken its place. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Golden Gate Theater, 1980<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-152979\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/SF-1980s-2.jpg\" alt=\"SF 1980s 2\" width=\"775\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo: <a rel=\"nobox\" href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp25.1719.jpg\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">OpenSFHistory\/wnp25.1719.jpg<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Golden Gate Theater opened in 1922 as a vaudeville house, but had fallen\u00a0into disrepair by the early 1970s. When the above photo was taken, it had recently been restored. The theater has hosted many Broadway shows, such as &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rent<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweeney Todd&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hairspray.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Hibernia Bank, 1980<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-152980\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/SF-1980s-3.jpg\" alt=\"SF 1980s 3\" width=\"1000\" height=\"699\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo: <a rel=\"nobox\" href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp25.1604.jpg\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">OpenSFHistory\/wnp25.1604.jpg<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Built in 1892, Hibernia Bank is one of the longest-standing buildings in San Francisco, and is recognized as a historic landmark. It was very recently\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/2016\/05\/hibernia-bank-tenderloin.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">renovated and reopened<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with Hillary Clinton leading the first public event after the\u00a0reopening. It had been empty since 2001.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Balboa Park MUNI yard, 1980<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-152981\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/SF-1980s-4.jpg\" alt=\"SF 1980s 4\" width=\"1000\" height=\"727\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo: <a rel=\"nobox\" href=\"http:\/\/opensfhistory.org\/Display\/wnp25.0316.jpg\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">OpenSFHistory\/wnp25.0316.jpg<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Balboa Park Station has serviced many Daly City and South Bay residents since it opened in 1973.<\/p>\n<h2>Doggie Diner at Mission Street, ca. 1980s<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-152983\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/SF-1980s-5.jpg\" alt=\"SF 1980s 5\" width=\"785\" height=\"638\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/doggiediner.com\/dd-mission-street_002\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doggie Diner<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doggie Diner was a fast food chain whose outlets each came with\u00a0a\u00a0seven-foot-tall statue of a dog\u2019s head with a chef\u2019s cap on top of a pole. Her photos are especially relevant considering how drastically SOMA, or South of Market, has changed since the tech boom. Office Furniture warehouse.
