Standing at the juncture of San Francisco’s\u00a0North Beach, Chinatown and Financial districts is Columbus Tower, otherwise known as the Sentinel Building. The eye-catching structure\u00a0has\u00a0been number 33 on the city’s\u00a0designated landmarks list\u00a0since 1970, and throughout its long history has housed<\/span>\u00a0some of the City by the Bay’s\u00a0best-known residents.<\/span><\/p>\n

Designed by architecture\u00a0firm Salfield and Kohlberg, the copper-green building’s\u00a0Flatiron-style design was popular between 1880 and 1926. It was completed in 1907 and has eight stories \u2014 the\u00a0top floor\u00a0was initally\u00a0the headquarters for Abe Ruef<\/a>, an\u00a0infamously corrupt political boss who eventually spent time at San Quentin Prison for bribery.<\/p>\n

In 1960, Columbus Tower\u00a0was bought by the Kingston Trio, an internationally acclaimed folk-pop group that\u00a0first gained popularity in North Beach nightclubs. The group\u00a0used the building as its\u00a0headquarters for 13\u00a0years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Francis Ford Coppola, the director who wrote the screenplay for \u201cThe Godfather\u201d in a North Beach cafe, bought the building in 1973 for $500,000. Since then, the top floor has been occupied by his film studio, American Zoetrope, which has put\u00a0out films such as \u201cApocalypse Now\u201d and \u201cThe Virgin Suicides.\u201d Other current tenants include producers at NPR and PBS, as well as\u00a0sound designers for Pixar and Skywalker Sound.<\/span><\/p>\n
