remember the severe flood that soaked their city in 1997, but it wasn\u2019t the only spring when the rushing Red River wreaked havoc.<\/p>\n<p>In April, May and June of 1950, for instance, rising waters displaced more than 100,000 people as one-eighth of Winnipeg was under water, according to the municipality.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the Winnipeg Free Press touted it \u201cCanada\u2019s Worst Flood Disaster.&#8221; To survey the damage for yourself, check out these 17 photos.<\/p>\n<h2>Leighton Avenue<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/leighton-avenue-winnipeg-flood.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[152423]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter Leighton Avenue, but the street&#8217;s proximity to the waterway led to its flooding.<\/p>\n<h2>Kingston Crescent<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/kingston-crescent-aerial-winnipeg-flood.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[152423]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" 1,200,000 sandbags were airlifted to Winnipeg to help in the flood containment effort, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/archives\/entry\/a-city-submerged-winnipeg-and-the-flood-of-1950\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">the CBC Digital Archives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>St. Vital<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/st-vital-winnipeg-flood.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[152423]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-152451\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/st-vital-winnipeg-flood.jpg\" alt=\"st-vital-winnipeg-flood\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: a record height of 30.2 feet in Winnipeg,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.ca\/history\/artifacts\/call-320---documentary-record-of-the-1950-manitoba-flood\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">according to the Red Cross<\/a>, which the city called in for help.<\/p>\n<h2>Scotia Street<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/scotia-street-winnipeg-flood.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[152423]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-152450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/scotia-street-winnipeg-flood.jpg\" alt=\"scotia-street-winnipeg-flood\" width=\"950\" residents along Scotia Street were rescued from their waterlogged homes and ushered towards drier land.<\/p>\n<h2>Scotia Street<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/scotia-street-winnipeg.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[152423]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full to the Manitoba Historical Society.<\/p>\n<h2>Winnipeg<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/flooded-winnipeg.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[152423]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-152514\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/flooded-winnipeg.jpg\" alt=\"flooded-winnipeg\" width=\"900\" height=\"521\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manitobaphotos.com\/1950.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">Stan Milosevic<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In all, the flood destroyed 10,000 homes across Winnipeg, including the district of St. Vital (above), and it damaged another 5,000 buildings, according to the province.<\/p>\n<h2>Manitoba Legislative Building<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/manitoba-legislative-building-winnipeg-flood.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[152423]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-152519\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/manitoba-legislative-building-winnipeg-flood.jpg\" alt=\"manitoba-legislative-building-winnipeg-flood\" width=\"950\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Manitoba Legislative building was one structure that survived the flood.<\/p>\n<h2>The Forks<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/the-forks-winnipeg-flood.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[152423]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-152462\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/the-forks-winnipeg-flood.jpg\" alt=\"the-forks-winnipeg-flood\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" On the recent 66th anniversary of the flood, the local paper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.winnipegfreepress.com\/special\/ctrl-f\/Reporting-our-flood-379974951.html\" target=\"_blank\"
