World War II was a pivotal period in history for Seattle. The success of Boeing brought jobs and unprecedented growth, making the city a national leader in industrial production. While some did the jitterbug, tens of thousands of military personnel and defense workers passed through Seattle, often deciding to make the beautiful city a permanent home. Here&#8217;s a photo journey back in time to Seattle in the 1940s.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Washington Athletic Club, ca. 1945<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/seattle-1940s-1.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[150916]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-150917\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/seattle-1940s-1.jpg\" alt=\"seattle 1940s 1\" width=\"982\" height=\"725\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/cdm16118.contentdm.oclc.org\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/p15015coll4\/id\/1822\/rec\/20\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seattle Public Library <\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 1940s, the Washington Athletic Club (WAC) mobilized its members to help fight World War II at home. In its \u201cVictory Center\u201d \u2014 which took up the entire seventh floor \u2014 women sewed, knit, spun, weaved and made surgical dressings. According to the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, in 1945 ownership of the clubhouse building was transferred to the membership <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/web6.seattle.gov\/DPD\/HistoricalSite\/QueryResult.aspx?ID=1249485012\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at a price of $1,350,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By 1950, the WAC was recognized as one of the most progressive athletic clubs in the nation, employing some 300 people and serving between 1,200 and 1,500 meals a day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Seattle Public Library, 1941<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/seattle-1940s-2.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[150916]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-150918\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/seattle-1940s-2.jpg\" alt=\"seattle 1940s 2\" width=\"995\" height=\"722\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/cdm16118.contentdm.oclc.org\/cdm\/fullbrowser\/collection\/p15015coll4\/id\/2044\/rv\/singleitem\/rec\/9\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seattle Public Library<\/span><\/i> <\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the hysteria following the attacks on Pearl Harbor, Seattle participated in one of the worst violations of constitutional rights in American history: the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/2015\/12\/seattle-panama-hotel-pearl-harbor-japanese-internment.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expulsion and internment of 12,892 persons of Japanese ancestry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Washington State. It was the beginning of public power in Seattle. The building remained a school until 1940, and then reopened in 1942 to house an aircraft assembly program aimed at training workers for World War II production. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.historylink.org\/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&amp;file_id=10579\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Historylink<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, classes in sheet metal and subassembly work were held in three shifts almost around the clock, and graduates went on to jobs at Boeing. In 1943, the building became the Building Trades unit of Edison Technical School.
