The city went through some radical developments during that decade as high-rises sprung up, older areas of the city faced demolition and buildings were repurposed for different uses. Building height! The photo above was taken at the intersection of West Cordova Street and Carrall Street, and shows the longstanding Army &amp; Navy store \u2014 still present today. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Beatty Street, 1961<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/vancouver-1960s-17-compressed.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[150021]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-150026\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/vancouver-1960s-17-compressed-702x1024.jpg\" alt=\"vancouver 1960s 17-compressed\" width=\"702\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/searcharchives.vancouver.ca\/looking-north-in-500-block-of-beatty-street\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City of Vancouver Archives<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taken not far from the intersection of Beatty Street and Dunsmuir Street, this photo shows the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/suntowerbuilding.com\/building\/history\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sun Tower<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Built in 1912, it was originally home to The Vancouver World newspaper, and for a time was the tallest building in the British Empire. By the 1960s, The Vancouver Sun newspaper had taken over the space and given it the name it goes by today. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In much more recent years, the Sun Tower was <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/suntowerbuilding.com\/tag\/smallville\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digitally enhanced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to play the role of the Watchtower in the TV series \u201cSmallville.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>West End and English Bay, 1965<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/vancouver-1960s-11.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[150021]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-150027\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/vancouver-1960s-11-1024x809.jpg\" alt=\"vancouver 1960s 11\" width=\"1024\" height=\"809\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/searcharchives.vancouver.ca\/nst-5649\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City of Vancouver Archives<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many things have changed in Vancouver in the last few decades, but not the beachy appeal of English Bay. Today, there are no movie theatres operating along the stretch, although venues like the Vogue and the Orpheum have been repurposed for live events. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Hotel Vancouver, 1965<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/vancouver-1960s-19-compressed.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[150021]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-150029\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/vancouver-1960s-19-compressed-690x1024.jpg\" alt=\"vancouver 1960s 19-compressed\" width=\"690\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/searcharchives.vancouver.ca\/not-yet-described-317\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City of Vancouver Archives<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hotel Vancouver, located in the heart of downtown and now branded as the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairmont.com\/hotel-vancouver\/hotel-history\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">third hotel in the city<\/a> to go by that name. The first was a much smaller five-storey brick building, and the second, built from 1912 to 1916, was turned into a government administration building during World War II and then torn down. Starting at the end of the 1950s, three levels of government <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/strathcona-residents.org\/our-history\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teamed up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to acquire and clear property in the area to make way for public housing projects. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The first phase of redevelopment started in 1960, and despite protests from the community, the second phase began in 1963 \u2014 an end didn\u2019t come until 1968, when neighbourhood associations were able to put a rehabilitation program in place.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Hotel Europe, ca. 1960<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/vancouver-1960s-16-compressed.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[150021]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-150032\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/vancouver-1960s-16-compressed-1024x685.jpg\" alt=\"vancouver 1960s 16-compressed\" width=\"1024\" height=\"685\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/searcharchives.vancouver.ca\/hotel-europe-at-43-powell-street\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City of Vancouver Archives<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastown, the location of the Hotel Europe, also faced some turmoil in the 1960s \u2014 like Strathcona, as well as Chinatown, it was scheduled to be redeveloped during that time. The grounds play host to the Playland amusement park, as well as the yearly Fair at the PNE. You may recognize Playland\u2019s wooden roller coaster in this photo \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pne.ca\/aboutus\/history-of-playland.html\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">built in 1958<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s still one of the park\u2019s most popular rides. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Planetarium, 1968<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/vancouver-1960s-20-compressed.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[150021]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-150037\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/vancouver-1960s-20-compressed-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"vancouver 1960s 20-compressed\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photo: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/searcharchives.vancouver.ca\/vancouver-planetarium\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City of Vancouver Archives<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Located across False Creek from the West End and downtown, the planetarium \u2014 formally known as the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre \u2014 opened in October 1968. The building was <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacecentre.ca\/about-us\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a gift to the city<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from lumber magnate H.R. MacMillan, who was inspired to provide it by the dawn of space exploration.
