As the city quickly changes, however, it becomes more and more imperative to remember the music establishments no longer with us. Lest we incur McSweeney\u2019s wrath, below are ten venues which left us too soon, from oldest to most recent order of closure.<\/p>\n<h2>The Black Hawk \u2014 Closed, 1963<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/The-Black-Hawk-interior.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[147627]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-147630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/The-Black-Hawk-interior.jpg\" alt=\"The-Black-Hawk-interior\" width=\"720\" height=\"565\" \/><\/a><em><em>The interior of the The Black Hawk, January 1961.\u00a0<\/em>Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/foundsf.org\/index.php?title=File:The-Black-Hawk,-January-26,-1961,-9-00-11-30-PM.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"lightbox[147627]\" class=\"external\">San Francisco History Center, SF Public Library<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Active from 1949 to 1963 in the Tenderloin, The Black Hawk featured live jazz antics from some of the greats. Those who recorded albums at the club includes Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and Cal Tjader with appearances by John Coltrane, Chet Baker, Vince Guaraldi, Billie Holiday, and Lester Young. In order to keep the shows all ages, the owners would have minors sit behind a wall of chicken wire in the back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Miles Davis Quintet \u2014 \u201cSo What\u201d at The Black Hawk in 1961:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jpDc5Cp1jLU\" width=\"650\" height=\"415\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>The Matrix \u2014 Closed, 1972<\/h2>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/matrix-charlatans.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[147627]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-147631\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/matrix-charlatans.jpg\" alt=\"matrix-charlatans\" width=\"885\" height=\"1134\" \/><\/a>A handbill from The Matrix. It was opened by Marty Balin in 1965 with Jefferson Airplane, the club\u2019s \u201chouse band,\u201d playing the very first night. Acts to follow would include The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Santana, and many, many more. After it\u2019s closure in 1972, the building reopened under different owners as MatrixFillmore in 2001 as a plush nightclub. A televised interview at The Matrix has resurfaced at the <a href=\"https:\/\/diva.sfsu.edu\/collections\/sfbatv\/bundles\/210748\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">San Francisco Bay Area Television Archive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Winterland Ballroom \u2014 Closed, 1979<\/h2>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/winterland.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[147627]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-147632\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/winterland.jpg\" alt=\"winterland\" width=\"504\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>The Winterland Ballroom in 1940.\u00a0Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/webbie1.sfpl.org\/multimedia\/sfphotos\/AAC-5567.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"lightbox[147627]\" class=\"external\">San Francisco History Center, SF Public Library<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Winterland was originally built as a million-dollar ice rink in 1928 before it was officially converted into a 5,400 capacity music venue in 1971 by legendary San Francisco promoter <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Graham_(promoter)\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">Bill Graham<\/a>. It was the venue Graham turned to when the Fillmore wasn\u2019t quite large enough. Rock and roll classics to have performed there include The Rolling Stones, Queen, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, The Who\u2026 the list goes on and on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sex Pistols at Winterland Ballroom in 1978:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QBVDSz5Qd6g\" width=\"650\" height=\"415\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>The Deaf Club \u2014 Closed, 1980<\/h2>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Deaf-club-logo.gif\" rel=\"lightbox[147627]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-147633\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Deaf-club-logo.gif\" alt=\"Deaf-club-logo\" width=\"720\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a>The Deaf Club logo. Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/foundsf.org\/index.php?title=File:Deaf-club-logo.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"lightbox[147627]\" class=\"external\">Found SF<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Punk exploded in San Francisco in the late 1970s, and traditional venues were not fast enough to realize the onslaught was there to stay. Enter The Deaf Club, a house venue on 16th and Valencia in the Mission opened by Robert Hanrahan, manager of The Offs. Opened only for 18 months due to neighborhood noise complaints, over 100 bands played such as seminal acts Germs and X. John Waters would also hang around.<\/p>\n<p><strong>H\u00fcsker D\u00fc \u2014 \u201cPrivate Hell\u201d at The Deaf Club in 1981:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FSM57g9cWqM\" width=\"650\" height=\"415\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Mabuhay Gardens \u2014 Closed, 1986<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/gardens.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[147627]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-147634\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/gardens.jpg\" alt=\"gardens\" width=\"539\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><em>Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys at Mabuhay Gardens in 1982. Local acts that regularly played included Dead Kennedys, Ramones, and Avengers. The \u201cpope of punk\u201d Dirk Dirksen would emcee and booked Patti Smith, Nico, Devo, The Police, Motorhead with comedy appearances by Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dead Kennedys at Mabuhay Gardens in 1980:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pAHX4Ww70xI\" width=\"650\" height=\"415\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>The Sound of Music \u2014 Closed, 1987<\/h2>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/the-sound-of-music.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[147627]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-147638\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/the-sound-of-music.jpg\" alt=\"the-sound-of-music\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" \/><\/a>Storefront of The Sound of Music. Hansen\/Lise Stampfli<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Sound of Music was a punk club designated for bands who were the underground of the underground in the Tenderloin. After the success of the Yoshi\u2019s in Oakland, the owners decided to expand and place a second venue into the \u201cFillmore Jazz Preservation District.\u201d Yoshi\u2019s would serve sushi alongside some of the most prolific jazz artists to roll through town. Unfortunately, the San Francisco Yoshi\u2019s closed in 2014, but the Oakland venue plays on.<\/p>\n<div
