As downtown San Francisco plays\u00a0host to Super Bowl City\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0a promotional village for fans to enjoy the spectacle&#8217;s 50th anniversary\u00a0&#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/why-bay-area-residents-are-protesting-the-super-bowl\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">Bay Area locals\u00a0rage against the\u00a0pageantry<\/a> of the week-long event, Alicia Keys and OneRepublic play\u00a0free concerts, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/sports\/features\/super-bowl-50-in-the-stratified-city-the-big-games-big-problem-20160203\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">a giant football sculpture made of Bud Light beer cans<\/a> has been erected for boozed-up revelers\u00a0to worship like some\u00a0sort of holy monument to sport.<\/p>\n<p>Five\u00a0decades ago,\u00a0Super Bowl I was held on\u00a0January 15, 1967 in Los Angeles, one\u00a0day before San Francisco\u2019s counterculture activist event <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human_Be-In\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">Human Be-In<\/a>, which preceded the city\u2019s \u201cSummer of Love.\u201d In the 1960s,\u00a0San Francisco was grappling against the norms of societal expectations, fighting for personal expression, and testing the electric Kool-Aid. But in the 1960s it was a viable mode of public transportation, although let\u2019s hope less rickety. Still in working condition at the time this photo was take was the Eureka Valley Station, a nearby MUNI station abandoned in 1972.
