Together with the Indian community, they staged a peaceful militant takeover and occupation of the land in 1970 after most of the Fort Lawton military base was declared surplus by the US Department of Defense.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Daybreak-Star-Indian-Cultural-Center-9.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[140378]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-140390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Daybreak-Star-Indian-Cultural-Center-9.jpg\" alt=\"Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center 9\" width=\"632\" height=\"430\" \/><\/a>Bernie Whitebear 1971. Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcollections.lib.washington.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/imlsmohai\/id\/1125\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">MOHAI<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to HistoryLink historians Patrick McRoberts and Kit Oldham, \u201cOn March 8, 1970, about 100 members and sympathizers of United Indian People\u2019s Council (later United Indians of All Tribes) confronted the 392nd Military Police Company, who were armed with riot gear, while attempting to claim part of Fort Lawton, a 1,100-acre army post in Seattle\u2019s Magnolia neighborhood. The proclamation was addressed to \u201cThe Great White Father and all of his people\u201d and read:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe the native Americans reclaim the land known as Ft. Lawton in the name of all American Indians by right of discovery. We feel that this land of Ft. Lawton is more suitable to pursue an Indian way of life, as determined by our own standards. By this we mean &#8212; this place does not resemble most Indian reservations. Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/civilr\/display.cgi?image=FtLawton\/Seattle%20Times\/ST.03.08.70.A20.jpg%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"lightbox[140378]\" class=\"external\">The Seattle Times<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/civilr\/FtLawton_press.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">Seattle Civil Rights and Labor History Project<\/a>, \u201cThrough the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Bernie Whitebear informed the public about challenges facing urban Indians, such as the 37 percent unemployment rate among Seattle Indians, poor housing and living conditions, and illiteracy.
