Rather than emerging from a cryogenic bunker 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse to confront terrifying relics of 1950s Americana, you can simply read on to learn about Cold War hysteria in the Pacific Northwest. That is &#8212; if you\u2019re willing to put down the controller.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Seattle-fallout-shelter-1.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[139432]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-139434\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Seattle-fallout-shelter-1.jpg\" alt=\"Seattle fallout shelter 1\" width=\"638\" height=\"492\" \/><\/a>President John F. Kennedy came to Seattle and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/jfks19611116\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">gave an address<\/a> at the University of Washington&#8217;s 100th Anniversary Program in Edmundson Pavilion. He emphasized the danger of a nuclear holocaust if American diplomacy failed with Russia. Frightened by terrifying images of mushroom clouds and radiation, Washingtonians began preparing for the worst.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jcSUpbG_0Go\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><em>1954 Spokane Washington Air Raid Drill. Video: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jcSUpbG_0Go\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">Public Domain Footage<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Seattle is the only city in the United States with a fallout shelter built under a freeway<\/h2>\n<p>According to Washington State Department of Transportation historian, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsdot.wa.gov\/NR\/rdonlyres\/96D37965-5D28-4F13-96B3-B35B044C7549\/0\/HolstineSAH_SeattleShelter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">Craig Holstine<\/a>, about a month after the Cuban Missile Crisis, construction of the fallout shelter under the I-5 highway began. It was intended to be a prototype for other cities to use to build community shelters. However, very few publicly financed shelters were ever built, leaving fearful citizens to finance their own private family shelter. Historian Holstine writes:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrompted by President John F. Kennedy\u2019s 1961 \u2018shelter program,\u2019 the federal government mostly left shelter preparedness to private citizens. Privately financed shelters pitted the rich and well-to-do against the less fortunate, homeowners against renters and apartment dwellers. Basic family shelters could cost $2,500 when median family income was only $5,315 in 1961.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/fallout-shelter.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[139432]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-139435\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/fallout-shelter-1024x922.jpg\" alt=\"fallout shelter\" width=\"700\" height=\"630\" \/><\/a><em>Woman demonstrating how to enter fallout shelter, Milwaukee. Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/hAErxLo.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"lightbox[139432]\" class=\"external\">Imgur<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fun Fact &#8212; Median family income today is $53,046 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/dashboard\/INC110213\/00\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">US Census Bureau<\/a>) and an average family fallout shelter today would cost $80,000 (<a href=\"http:\/\/undergroundbombshelter.com\/bomb-shelter-questions.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">Underground Bomb Shelter<\/a>). Remember when you could get a Coca Cola from the drugstore for a nickel? Built in 1962 as a safeguard against the potential threat of nuclear warfare, this Seattle freeway fallout shelter was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historylink.org\/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&amp;file_id=3705\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">first of its kind<\/a> in the nation. The engineering firm of Andersen Bjornstad Kane originally designed the shelter to protect up to 300 people in the event of thermonuclear attack. The shelter cost $67,000 to build.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/4579121771_7aa08b99e2_b.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[139432]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-139437\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/4579121771_7aa08b99e2_b-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"4579121771_7aa08b99e2_b\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a>I-5 Fallout Shelter Exterior. The shelter was covered with 4.5\u00a0feet of backfill and 429 tons of sand to protect shelterees from radiation, reports <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historylink.org\/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&amp;file_id=3705\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">History Link<\/a>, the free online encyclopedia of Washington State History.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Seattle-fallout-shelter-4.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[139432]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-139438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Seattle-fallout-shelter-4-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Seattle fallout shelter 4\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a>I-5 Fallout Shelter Exterior. The food and supplies shelterees brought with them was to be turned over to the shelter manager to be equally distributed among the 300 who escaped the nuclear holocaust. It was designed with the body heat of 300 people in mind, but with fewer occupants it required space heaters to stay warm.
