Born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1816, William March Rice was the businessman who founded Rice University in 1891. He was later killed by his valet who, along with a lawyer named Albert Patrick, forged his will to receive his money.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Shamrock Hotel, ca. 1947<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/HC2-compressed.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[135842]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-135845\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/HC2-compressed.jpg\" alt=\"Shamrock Hotel\" width=\"1000\" height=\"783\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/smu_cul_digitalcollections\/12819921604\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">SMU Central University Libraries\/Flickr<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fittingly, the Shamrock Hotel held a grand opening party on St. Patrick\u2019s Day, 1949. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management building wrapped up in 1974. Designed by architecture firm Pierce &amp; Pierce, the building houses <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, the Hilton University of Houston Hotel and Conference Center and the Continuing Education Center. The South Wing of the building opened in 1989 after the Hilton Foundation donated $21.3 million. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Philip G. Completed in 1950, the tunnel was named after Harry L. The trains traveled all around California, Utah, Portland, Nevada, Oregon as well as through New Orleans, Texas and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Astrodome, ca. 1964<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/HC10-compressed.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[135842]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-135854\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/HC10-compressed-1024x803.jpg\" alt=\"Astrodome\" width=\"1024\" height=\"803\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.houstonlibrary.org\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/images\/id\/1621\/rec\/14\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">University of Houston Digital Libraries<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Houston Astrodome was the first multi-purpose, domed stadium in the world. Home to the Houston Astros until 1999 and the Houston Oilers NFL team until 1997, the Astrodome has been shuttered since 2008, with a number of proposals to renovate\u00a0the structure failing to stick.<\/p>\n<h2>San Jacinto Hotel, ca. 1926<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/HC11-compressed.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[135842]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-135855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/HC11-compressed.jpg\" alt=\"San Jacinto Hotel\" width=\"499\" height=\"638\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.houstonlibrary.org\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/schlueter\/id\/124\/rec\/16\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">University of Houston Digital Libraries<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The San Jacinto Hotel, or the Texas State Hotel, was designed by architect Joseph Finger in the 1920s.
