In 1898, during the Klondike Gold Rush, the <a href=\"http:\/\/pioneer-building.com\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Pioneer Building<\/a> was home to 48 mining companies. Reed and Allen H. Although Lyman didn\u2019t live to see the project through to completion, his son was able to continue his legacy. <a href=\"http:\/\/smithtower.com\/observe\/history-facts\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Smith Tower<\/a> quickly became the tallest structure on the West Coast until the Space Needle stole the title in 1962. Today, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/10\/21\/garden\/21who.html?_r=0\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">tower\u2019s pyramid-shaped penthouse<\/a> is home to Petra Franklin Lahaie and her family. Carlson. By the time land was\u00a0finally\u00a0acquired to build the Space Needle, construction crews had only one year to get the structure completed in time for the 1961\u00a0World\u2019s Fair, which had a 21st century theme.\u00a0The modular, flying saucer-topped Space Needle was to be the main event.
