Ever since, it\u2019s been a staple of Edmonton\u2019s skyline with its Chateau-style architecture and majestic turrets. While it\u2019s hard to miss the building\u2019s imposing shape and structure, it\u2019s not as easy to spot the many intricate details throughout the architectural work. Upon closer inspection, you\u2019ll notice cornices, decorative eavestroughs, arches and pillars with stone detailing like gargoyles and crests of the four western provinces.<\/p>\n<h2>Ca. 1929<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/MH2-compressed1.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[132282]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-132287\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/MH2-compressed1.jpg\" alt=\"Fairmont Hotel Macdonald\" width=\"800\" height=\"499\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/peel.library.ualberta.ca\/postcards\/PC006739.html \">Peel&#8217;s Prairie Provinces,<\/a> a digital initiative of <a href=\"http:\/\/library.ualberta.ca\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">the University of Alberta Libraries<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Over the years the hotel has been a centerpiece for social occasions &#8212; something the country\u2019s first prime minister\u00a0and the Mac\u2019s namesake knew quite a lot about. During his political prime in the 19th century, John A. Macdonald accumulated some frat-worthy <a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2015\/01\/06\/sir-john-macdonald-drunk-flames\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">party tales<\/a>, like the time he set himself on fire in his London hotel room, the time he vomited on stage at a political debate, or the time he brought $13,000 worth of champagne to a Confederation Conference in Prince Edward Island. Other celebratory events include the 100th Year, Gatsby-style New Year\u2019s Eve Gala and a Celebrating 100 Years package, including a one-night accommodation, a three-course dinner for two, a buffet breakfast for two, valet parking and a bottle of the hotel\u2019s 100th Anniversary Blend wine.<\/p>\n<h2>Ca. 1940<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/MH5.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[132282]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-132289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/MH5.jpg\" alt=\"Fairmont Hotel Macdonald\" width=\"800\" height=\"526\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/peel.library.ualberta.ca\/postcards\/PC006744.html\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Peel&#8217;s Prairie Provinces,<\/a> a digital initiative of <a href=\"http:\/\/library.ualberta.ca\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">the University of Alberta Libraries<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Recently, an elderly woman named Mary Schlader <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edmontonjournal.com\/Amnesty+borrowed+items+brings+artifacts+back+Hotel+Macdonald\/11004882\/story.html\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">found a menu<\/a> from the Hotel Macdonald dating back to the 1940s in a drawer in her home. The menu was a keepsake from a Supper Dance in 1945, which she attended with an American soldier from New York. On the menu that night: iced celery and relish, stuffed turkey and cream of tomato soup.<\/p>\n<h2>Ca. 1915<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/MH7-compressed.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[132282]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-132292\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/MH7-compressed-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"Fairmont Hotel Macdonald\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/internetarchivebookimages\/14760545896\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Internet Archive Book Image\/Flickr<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>With its regal look and majestic turrets, the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald is indeed fit for a queen. In fact, Queen Elizabeth II of England has her very own suite there. Other notable visitors\u00a0include Paul McCartney, Bill Clinton, the Rolling Stones and Oprah Winfrey. On one unforgettable occasion, Gene Simmons <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edmontonsun.com\/2015\/07\/03\/100-years-of-edmontons-hotel-macdonald-where-the-superstars-sleep\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">crashed<\/a> a wedding that was taking place in the hotel, giving a speech on stage in front of the guests. Another memorable celebrity stay was that of superstar songstress Cher, who ended up sleeping in her tour bus instead of her suite.<\/p>\n<h2>Date unknown<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/MH8.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[132282]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-132293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/MH8.jpg\" alt=\"Fairmont Hotel Macdonald\" width=\"395\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/pin\/538320961686841024\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Pinterest<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald was built by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway company in the early 20th century. The building was completed in 1915, but the president of the company that built it didn\u2019t live to see the day the doors opened: he died when the Titanic sunk on April 14th, 1912.<\/p>\n<h2>Ca. 1940<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/MH9.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[132282]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-132294\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/MH9.jpg\" alt=\"Fairmont Hotel Macdonald\" width=\"736\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/searcharchives.vancouver.ca\/view-of-macdonald-hotel-edmonton-alberta\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">City of Vancouver Archives<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The hotel was designed by high-profile Montreal architecture firm Ross &amp; Macdonald (the name is just a coincidence). The firm created some of the most well-known Canadian landmarks to date, including the Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg, Maple Leaf Gardens and the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto. Ross &amp; Macdonald\u00a0also worked with urban planners to rebuild residential areas of Halifax after the infamous Halifax Explosion of 1917.<\/p>\n<h2>Date unknown<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/MH10.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[132282]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-132295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/MH10.jpg\" alt=\"Fairmont Hotel Macdonald\" width=\"736\" height=\"575\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/pin\/492370171734205751\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Pinterest<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald, along with seven other Fairmont hotels across Canada, boast the title of \u201cbee pollinator hotels.\u201d Through its partnership with Burt\u2019s Bees and the Wild for Bees campaign, the Mac features replicas of natural bees\u2019 nests to provide a home for the species. In support of the little buzzers, Jiju Paul, the executive chef at the hotel\u2019s restaurant, created a bee-inspired menu featuring items like fennel pollen and brioche crusted halibut and local honey and grapefruit vinaigrette.<\/p>\n<h2>Ca. 1938<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/MH11-compressed.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[132282]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-132296\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/MH11-compressed.jpg\" alt=\"Fairmont Hotel Macdonald\" width=\"800\" height=\"511\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/peel.library.ualberta.ca\/postcards\/PC006742.html\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Peel&#8217;s Prairie Provinces,<\/a> a digital initiative of <a href=\"http:\/\/library.ualberta.ca\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">the University of Alberta Libraries<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.ca\/2015\/04\/27\/price-is-right-edmonton_n_7152902.html\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> published in\u00a0Huffington Post, a contestant on the game show The Price is Right recently won a trip to Edmonton with a six-night stay at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald. However, instead of the hotel\u2019s impressive facade, the graphics showed the word \u201cCanada\u201d splashed across a picturesque view of Moraine Lake and surrounding mountains. The winning contestant didn\u2019t choose to stay at the hotel, instead opting to travel around Banff and Lake Louise in an RV. The historic building would have faced the wrecking ball if the City of Edmonton hadn\u2019t intervened and designated it as a Municipal Heritage Resource in 1985 (the first of its kind in the city). The new-and-improved hotel made its debut in 1991 with upgraded\u00a0and\u00a0modern conveniences, new specialty suites in the attic (including the Queen Elizabeth II suite), and renovated guestrooms
