Carlson. After a long search, the project leaders finally purchased a 120-foot by 120-foot plot near Broad Street for $75,000.<\/p>\n<h2>ca. 1961<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/SN2.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[129629]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-129633\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/SN2-815x1024.jpg\" alt=\"SN1\" width=\"815\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Space_Needle_under_construction,_1961.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[129629]\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Wikimedia Commons<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Once the land was acquired, construction had to move quickly to ensure that the tower was ready for the World\u2019s Fair, which was to take place just one year later. The fair\u2019s theme was 21st century, and the modular, flying saucer-topped Space Needle was to be the main event.<\/p>\n<h2>1962<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/SN31.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[129629]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-129646\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/SN31-1024x637.jpg\" alt=\"SN3\" width=\"1024\" height=\"637\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/cdm16118.contentdm.oclc.org\/cdm\/compoundobject\/collection\/p15015coll3\/id\/3908\/rec\/18\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">The Seattle Public Library<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Space Needle was completed in December 1961 at a cost of $4.5 million. The space-age theme was carried through all the way to the paint colors with Astronaut White for the legs, Re-entry Red for the halo, Orbital Olive for the core and Galaxy Gold for the sunburst and roof.<\/p>\n<h2>ca. 1962<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/SN14.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[129629]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-129658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/SN14.jpg\" alt=\"SN14\" width=\"632\" height=\"882\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/cdm16118.contentdm.oclc.org\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/p15015coll3\/id\/3785\/rec\/46\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Seattle Public Library<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The tower opened to the public on April 21st, 1962 &#8212; the first day of the World\u2019s Fair. During the several months that the fair was in Seattle, 2.3 million visitors explored the landmark and almost 20,000 people took the elevators all the way to the top.<\/p>\n<h2>ca. 1962<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/SN12.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[129629]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-129655\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/SN12-949x1024.jpg\" alt=\"SN12\" width=\"949\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vintageseattle.org\/2008\/11\/25\/life-magazine-seattle-photos-pt-2\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Vintage Seattle<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The entire Space Needle structure measures 605 feet with retail shopping at ground level, a banquet facility 100 feet up, the revolving SkyCity restaurant 500 feet up and an observation deck at 520 feet. The restaurant was named restaurant of the year by Washington Wine Commission in 2009 and \u201cBest View\u201d by Where Magazine\u2019s Visitors Choice Dining Awards.<\/p>\n<h2>ca. 1978<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/SN61.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[129629]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-129649\" src=\"https:\/\/www.livabl.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/SN61-681x1024.jpg\" alt=\"SN6\" width=\"681\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><em>Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/seattlemunicipalarchives\/7562846292\/\" class=\"external\" target=\"_blank\">Seattle Municipal Archives\/Flickr<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Each elevator in the Space Needle weighs about 14,000 pounds and can hold a maximum of 4,500 pounds, or roughly 25 people.
