<\/a>Photo: Edith Macefield House\/Facebook<\/a><\/em><\/p>\nIn Disney Pixar\u2019s 2009 animated blockbuster \u201cUp,\u201d elderly widower Carl Fredricksen refuses to sell his home to developers, who go ahead with construction around his pristine plot of land. \u201cTell your boss he can have my house,\u201d says Carl to a foreman in one of the opening scenes. \u201cReally?\u201d he responds. \u201cYeah. When I\u2019m dead!\u201d Carl quips.<\/p>\n
The plot of the film is remarkably similar to the true story of Edith Macefield, who was offered $1 million to sell her 108 year-old farmhouse in Seattle\u2019s Ballard neighbourhood. The 84 year-old became a local hero for refusing to bend to the commercial developers\u2019 demands, telling The Seattle Post-Intelligencer<\/a> in 2007, \u201cI don’t want to move. I don’t need the money. Money doesn’t mean anything.\u201d<\/p>\n Edith eventually befriended the project\u2019s senior superintendent, Barry Martin, who took care of her — driving her to doctor\u2019s appointments, running errands and listening to incredible stories about her younger days. When she died in 2008, she left the house to Barry. It was then sold for $310,000 to Greg Pinneo, who planned to elevate the house<\/a> to the height of the surrounding buildings, remodel the interior as an office and add community space underneath.<\/p>\n In March of this year, Pinneo defaulted on the loans and the house went into foreclosure. A mother-daughter duo placed the winning bid on the property, keen to open up a pie shop in Edith\u2019s name. But the potential buyers were forced to back out<\/a> due to the cost of bringing it up to the 2012 housing code.<\/p>\n Edith Macefield\u2019s holdout home could soon face a wreckingball. On June 29th, the listing broker announced the home would have to be relocated or demolished within 90 days. The seller is hoping to donate the house to a non-profit and then then sell the land. Interested parties may submit their proposals at www.NoBSBroker.com<\/a> from now until the end of July.
