<\/a><\/p>\nConstruction workers are chugging away at 205 East 92nd Street by Related Companies in Yorkville.<\/p>\n
Permits<\/a> were first filed in 2011 and issued last week for a 36-story mixed-use building. The through-block lot between Second and Third avenues, once home to Ruppert Playground, will sprout a new building with 231 units.<\/p>\n Handel Architects is the architect of record for the development; there will be 304,825 square feet of residential space, 33,465 square feet of commercial space and 46,010 square feet of community facility space. A $32 million school for children with learning disabilities will anchor the tower, the Wall Street Journal<\/a> reported. The apartments will start on the eighth floor.<\/p>\n The project has a long, combative history; the developer acquired the site when it was Ruppert Playground in the early 1980s and agreed to operate the playground as a public space until 2008, according to the Wall Street Journal. When the 25-year deal with the city expired, Related moved forward with development plans, angering neighbors. Despite the controversy, the City Planning Commission approved the new building proposal in August 2013, NY YIMBY<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n Construction commenced in early March. Later that month, workers uncovered remnants of the Ruppert Brewery<\/a>, founded in 1867, at the site.<\/p>\n The construction fencing bears an updated rendering, first reported by Curbed<\/a>. The building is slated for completion in 2016.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n
