While HBO’s fantasy epic Game of Thrones is set in a world of dragons and “white walkers”, the series is strongly rooted in reality, thanks in large part to its use of elaborate architectural stage sets and historical landmarks.
With cameras set to begin rolling on season five this fall, HBO recently announced that shooting will take place in southern Spain.
Alcazar of Seville has already been confirmed as a filming site. It’s rumored that the medieval Spanish castle will serve as the set of the Water Gardens of Dorne, the summer residence of House Martell.

Throughout the first season, Castle Ward in Northern Ireland stood in as Winterfell.
Pictured above is Shane’s Castle, a ruin in Northern Ireland near Randalstown. The ruin has been used many times, including the Tourney of the Hand scenes in the first season and some shots of King Robert Baratheon arriving at Winterfell in the first episode of the series.
