234 Wythe

Get on the L, loser, we’re going shopping; permits have come in for the retail renovation of a warehouse at 234 Wythe Avenue.

J.Crew could be setting up shop at the site between North 3rd and North 4th streets, Crain’s reported earlier this month. The retail giant and purveyor of breezy nautical tops has not confirmed this new location. J.Crew originally planned to open its first Brooklyn store at 151 Court Street in Cobble Hill this year, but that has yet to happen.

The 6,000-square-foot red brick structure, which has 50 feet of frontage along Wythe Avenue, will get an estimated $450,000 in renovations, according to the plan exam application filed yesterday. The development will rise one story and 22 feet tall.

Crain’s speculates whether J.Crew will have a concept store at 234-236 Wythe (italics our own):

“Retailers that have opened Williamsburg locations have taken pains to blend in with the area’s aura as a precinct for cool. Urban Outfitters, which sells the hipster-style clothing and merchandise that was pioneered in Williamsburg, opened a store there called Space Ninety 8. It sells one of a kind, Brooklyn-made goods like bikes and housewares. It was not clear if J.Crew has a similar special concept in mind for its new space.”

Update May 5: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the J.Crew deal for space at 151 Court in Cobble Hill fell through.
