Livabl spoke to Elizabeth Nguyen, the marketing manager for Woodside Homes in Arizona, about the company’s builds in Phoenix and the metropolitan area.

What is the mission of Woodside Homes?

A buyer’s home should be their sanctuary. It should be a space as unique as they are to help the buyer and their loved ones live a little easier. That’s why for more than 40 years, Woodside Homes has gone beyond designing and building beautiful homes in the southwest and on the west coast.

We’re focused on simplifying the home buying process and helping buyers make the right choice for their priorities and lifestyle. Our mission is to help buyers live their best lives in a community where they can flourish. We take pride in providing healthy, cleverly designed homes so they can love where they live.

In 2017, Woodside Homes entered a definitive merger with Sekisui House, Ltd. As a result, the Japanese company acquired 100% ownership of Woodside Homes. Can you tell us a bit about Sekisui House?

Founded in Japan in 1960, Sekisui House, Ltd. is a world-leading residential developer that has built over 2.5 million homes worldwide. With “Love of Humanity” as its Corporate Philosophy, Sekisui House believes that homes should offer residents comfort, security, and peace of mind while maintaining harmony with the environment and its surroundings.

How has Woodside grown and evolved in Arizona?

Since our Arizona founding in 1991, our division has evolved considerably over the last 30 years. But, never being content with the status quo, we’re always looking for ways to improve our designs and internal processes to create the best possible experience for our homeowners.

As we continue to see the effects of climate change and rising energy costs, we feel it essential to shift towards sustainable building practices. At our new communities, we’ve introduced an expansive energy platform that includes certifications like Energy Star, Indoor airPLUS, WaterSense, Zero Energy Ready, and the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). Woodside Homes helps buyers reduce their carbon footprint. It’s an investment in their families and the surrounding environment.

But our commitment to advancement doesn’t end there. For example, our team members are involved in a program called “The 4 Disciplines of Execution” by FranklinCovey. By connecting with members outside of our departments in weekly breakout groups, we can look at the company holistically. As a result, we are better equipped to find and solve areas that need improvement.

What do you think makes Arizona a great place to live?

Arizona has something for everyone. The Phoenix-metro area offers endless opportunities for work and play in cities that foster community with their unique charm. In addition, buyers can find relaxed living in the high country. The Prescott area connects the great outdoors to their doorstep, with four-season living and a tight-knit community, just two hours north of the Phoenix-metro area.

How would you describe Woodside Homes’ Arizona portfolio?

Whether a buyer is a first-time homeowner looking for a move-up or settling into retirement, we offer a wide range of home designs to help them create the perfect backdrop for a well-lived life. Beyond bedroom and bath counts, our homes are hyper-focused on lifestyle solutions. Flex rooms can evolve with the owner, serving as a playroom for young children, a homework hangout space for teenagers, or a home yoga studio once they’ve left the nest. If buyers need room for aging parents (or if a college graduate is moving back in), casita and multi-generational suites with separate entrances are available in select communities.

Downsizing doesn’t have to mean compromising. Many of our smaller homes include options for spa-like primary bathrooms and elevated kitchen designs to give owners the luxurious, low-maintenance lifestyle they have always wanted.

What demographics are looking for new Arizona homes?

Arizona attracts home shoppers from all walks of life, and we strive to craft homes for their lifestyles. Generally, we’ve seen that master-planned communities attract families seeking amenities like a community pool, playgrounds, parks, and recreation centers. For those looking for an active retirement, the Prescott area offers miles of hiking trails and lakeside recreation in a beautiful climate.

How do you think the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the market and your offerings?

Being at home meant more doing at home – and cleaning, cooking, teaching, and working in what felt like every inch of your home could make it hard to find a place to escape the everyday. So, we sharpened our pencils and looked for ways to elevate our home designs to make work-from-home work for the owner.

Enhancements range from dedicated workspaces for 9-to-5, soothing spa-like primary bathrooms for that post-clock-out escape, extended patios with large windows to let the outside in and pet-centric options for four-legged family members.

What new projects or offerings will Woodside Homes roll out next?

We have a lot of very exciting communities coming soon. By the end of 2022, we plan to open our model homes in Black Rock at Verrado in Buckeye and expand our floor plan offerings in The Dells community in Prescott. By 2023, we plan to open our model homes in Fire Sky at Alamar in Avondale, as well as a large, amenity-rich community in Queen Creek that will offer 25-floor plans.
