What happens when you take on of the historic Vancouver buildings from 1910 and restore it with a 2022 spin? That’s what Hudson Projects is doing with Broadhurst & Whitaker.

Broadhurst & Whitaker is a boutique community of one- and two-bedroom heritage and modern townhomes located in a revitalized 1910 building. These are courtyard townhomes with terraces or private rooftops with views of the city, and residents will have access to a landscaped courtyard.

There are heritage details designed by MA+HG Architects, Inc. Hudson Projects is aiming to keep the theme of the historic building going throughout the new interiors. There’s hexagon tiles in bathrooms in the millwork and design, a neutral palette, white kitchen cabinets and much more.

The revitalized building has ties to early members of Vancouver’s real estate community. At the turn of the 20th century, realtors Charles Broadhurst and Frederick Whitaker commissioned the construction of what became known as the Broadhurst & Whitaker Block.

Home to their office on the ground floor, the building became a cornerstone of Cedar Cottage — a thriving village centre with dozens of shops, a post office, brewery and silent movie theatre. A tram stop at 18th and Commercial drew visitors and merchants from across the region.

The Broadhurst and Whitaker Block is valued for its connection to the early development of South Vancouver. The Cedar Cottage neighbourhood in particular is celebrated for its Edwardian-era architecture.

The historic two-storey structure features four merchant storefronts at street level with beautifully crafted residences on the second floor. The architecture is defined by its symmetry and prominent bay windows on the upper level.

Classic Edwardian-era architectural and decorative details are being preserved to celebrate the building’s heritage, including original fir floors, tin ceilings and the incorporation of exposed metal structural elements.

Today, Broadhurst & Whitaker is part of a thriving neighbourhood in Cedar Cottage with cafes, restaurants, businesses and shops on Commercial Street. To access more amenities, it’s a short drive to the Commercial Drive area.
