Fantasizing about luxury real estate is part of human nature. If money were no object, what kind of home would you buy and where would it be? An island getaway may be the ideal dream for some, but others might want a sprawling ranch or a monstrous but chic penthouse condo in the middle of downtown.

The media has always loved to feed into the interest of fantasy living. Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, MTV Cribs, Architectural Digest — even a quick Google will turn up plenty of listicles on the wildest and most expensive homes for sale around the world. YouTube channels like The Richest and Luxury Zone offer viewers glimpses inside the outlandish homes of LeBron James, Elon Musk and Eminem. You can even check out the secret island mansion hideaway of Pablo Escobar, which was rumoured to have been worth $5 billion back in its heyday.

Picture separate living quarters for a full-time staff, indoor glass bottom pools, elevators for quick access between the numerous floors, tennis and basketball courts, movie theatres that sit 30 or more, underground garages to store a fleet of vehicles … the only limit is the homeowner’s imagination.

Toronto is home to some of the most expensive condos in the country, two of which are located in The One by Mizrahi Developments at One Bloor West in Yorkville. The One is scheduled for completion in 2023 and will contain 416 units encased in a 91-storey behemoth.

The One: $31.6 million

Luxury condo

The Grand Penthouse 2 in The One is just over 6,000 square feet and retails for a cool $31.6 million. The three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom dream home comes complete with its own elevator that opens directly into the penthouse. Tons of windows provide an impressive view of the city’s skyline, all the way out to Lake Ontario.

To exercise a modicum of restraint, check out the Penthouse Suite 02 at The One. This three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom suite is 4,351 square feet and will set a potential homeowner back $17.3 million. The penthouse is a block c-shaped suite with a spacious dining room right in the centre of the unit.

Options abound for those with money to burn. For the rest of us, it’s gazing at pictures, videos, more daydreaming and perhaps the occasional lottery ticket purchased with fingers and toes crossed.
