The One by Mizrahi Developments is set to become Canada’s tallest building at an approved height of 306.9 metres. The 85-storey residence is currently under construction on the southwest corner of Yonge and Bloor Street in Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood.
Once complete, the project will surpass the height of Canada’s current tallest tower, First Canadian Place, by several meters. However, in December 2020, the developer of The One submitted an addendum to add nine storeys to the already supertall building. If approved, it would boost the condo tower’s floor count from 85 storeys to 94 storeys and increase its height to 338.3 metres, staving off any competitors in its mission to become the country’s tallest tower.
Impressive in sheer height and scale, The One’s internal structure is itself a feat of engineering and a sight to behold as it rises above ground. Designed by renowned architectural firm Foster + Partners — known for designing the Gherkin in London and Hearst Tower in New York City — The One features a unique exoskeleton that provides much of the tower’s structural support. The system is similar to a nautilus shell, which has an external skeleton that supports and protects its body, but is free of bones or internal structures.
The One’s exoskeleton consists of a series of super columns and bronze steel diagonal trusses that showcase the glass-to-glass corners of the interior. The advanced structural engineering and innovative design technique is the first of its kind in Canada and allows for uncontaminated interior spaces with maximum exposure to sunlight, and layouts that homebuyers can customize.
The building’s intricate array of support structures, including a maze of steel beams and canted columns, are presently on display as construction continues on site. The view from the northeast corner of the intersection shows a lattice of steel beams and rebar rising from the fifth floor. We can also get a glimpse of the massive retail space situated at the base of the tower. The double-height flagship space boasts a light-filled, jewel box-like and column-free layout.
When completed in 2023, The One will house over 400 residential suites, luxury amenities, and a new Andaz Hotel on floors four through 16. Amenities include a marble-clad Sky Lobby with concierge service and valet parking, a state-of-the-art fitness centre, infinity pool and a sprawling 9,000-square-foot rooftop garden. Residents will also have access to a series of club rooms, which can be combined to create one huge space for large affairs, or separated for more intimate gatherings.
