Lifestyle changes brought on by the pandemic have prompted Canadians to rethink how and where they spend their time. Now more than ever, people are turning to the suburbs and countryside in search of a more peaceful, family-oriented environment with larger living spaces than they would have in the city.

Those considering an escape to a more rural environment may well be persuaded by the Legacy Cottages development in picturesque Muskoka. Developed by a team consisting of The Rosseau Group, Rock Cliff Custom Homes and Hicks Design Studio, the 43-unit cottage community sits amidst the pristine landscapes and crystal clear waters of Lake Rosseau. The cottages are already under construction and the developer has just released the final collection of nine units.

Priced from $959,900, the cottages boast traditional wood cottage design, modern features and contemporary finishes. Elevations and colour schemes follow strict architectural control to stay true to the Muskoka style, and include wood siding, Extira columns and front porches with pre-finished pine ceilings.

“The designs reflect the tradition of a Muskoka cottage found throughout the lakes,” said William Hicks, Founder of Hicks Design Studio. “I used simple structures with simple detailing with the use of traditional gable ends, porches and wood siding. The roof lines are kept lower intentionally so that there are views of the stunning lake.”

Inside, large windows are paired with nine-foot ceilings and open-concept layouts to create bright and spacious living areas. Modern features like recessed pot lights and 36-inch gas fireplaces are standard, while vaulted ceilings (as per plan) and tongue-and-groove panelling add a subtle, rustic touch in the great rooms. Meanwhile, home chefs will appreciate the gourmet kitchens, which come complete with custom cabinets, tiled backsplashes, and a choice of granite or quartz countertops.

“The focus of the cottage is on the great room, kitchen and screened porch as this is where the family life is centred,” said Hicks. “The kitchen is open to the great room with vaulted ceilings in many of these areas that can be finished in timber or simply detailed as the owner wishes.”

Legacy Cottages offers an exclusive array of amenities including 400 feet of shared waterfront. A swimming pool pavilion overlooking Muskoka is perfect for a vigorous workout or a leisurely dip. Sip your favourite cocktail on the deck lounge, or head over to the boathouse and launch a canoe, kayak or pontoon boat for an afternoon sail on Lake Rosseau.

“Legacy Cottages is so unique in the fact that it offers unparalleled amenities like boat access, a clubhouse and more,” said Roman Rockcliffe, Founding Partner of Rock Cliff Custom Homes. “The average cottage in Muskoka doesn’t come with amenities.”
