Originally launched in 2015, the sold-out Design Haus Condos is inching closer to occupancy as construction on the project nears completion.
Construction on the 116-unit development by Shiu Pong Group of Companies started in 2017 with the demolition of a heritage brick and terracotta property that previously housed a Caribbean restaurant, convenience store and 15 residential units at the corner of Huron and College Streets.
By late 2018, the project had surpassed grade level and in 2019, installation of the exterior cladding commenced. This included the lower levels, which were designed to accommodate a re-build of the original building’s heritage facade using red brick, white precast concrete and moulded terracotta reliefs. A 17-storey glass tower designed by Kirkor Architect + Planners rises above the heritage portion and is clad in the commonly seen spandrel glass window wall system framed by extensive use of grey mullions.
Today, the crane is no longer on site as much of the exterior has been completed including the heritage portion and most of the balconies. While the majority of the work is now being completed indoors, the project’s hoist is still attached on the south side of the building and the surrounding balconies are still unfinished.
When completed, Design Haus will feature modern interiors by U31 including a double height lobby with geometric floor inlays, sculptured furnishings and dramatic light fixtures. Residential suites boast open-concept layouts with impressive views of downtown Toronto and the University of Toronto campus.
Residents will have access to a robust collection of social and recreational amenities, including a state-of-the-art fitness centre with cardio and weight training equipment as well as aerobics and yoga areas. The eighth floor party room includes a full catering kitchen, double-sided fireplace, wet bar and dining area. There’s also a private movie theatre and an outdoor terrace equipped with barbecues and ample seating.
