Orange County might be synonymous with beachfront mansions, but it could soon see the addition of a 37-story, mixed-use tower. The proposed Santa Ana skyscraper, known as One Broadway Plaza or “The One,” would become the tallest building in the county if approved by the city’s planning commission.

The project has been in development for more than 20 years but its plans were recently revised to include 415 apartments and 20,000 square feet of office space. Previous iterations were entirely commercial, but developer Mike Harrah now wants to introduce studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom units into the mix.

There would be a separate, nine-story parking garage with 2,463 spaces, a basement-level data center and vault, ground-floor retail and restaurants, and a proposed first-floor theater and art exhibit center. The architectural drawings also include building amenities like a state-of-the-art fitness center and spa, food court and lounge spaces.

The corporate components call for a live presentation theater, conference rooms and executive offices. Topping off the building would be two world-class restaurants with sweeping views of Orange County and the Pacific Ocean. The glass and steel structure was designed by Los Angeles-based architecture firm Carrier Johnson + Culture.

The revised plans for The One, located at 1109 North Broadway, were first presented to City Council on April 21st via teleconference. According to The Orange County Register, initial approval was granted by the council to allow for the inclusion of residential units. During the following meeting on May 5th, council members voted unanimously to approve the amendment to the development plan.
