It’s been a tumultuous decade, to say the least. While the 2010s brought us Instagram, leggings as pants, Game of Thrones, and many, many memes, it also saw the rise of gun violence, Ebola and extreme weather events. We could all use a fresh start in 2020— that’s the message behind Behr Paint’s choice of “Back To Nature” as its Color of the Year.
Described as a “a restorative, meadow-inspired green,” Back to Nature is tinged with yellow. “As we look ahead to a new decade, Back To Nature encourages us to reengage with the natural world, which we know can have a real, positive impact on our well-being,” says Erika Woelfel, vice president of color and creative services at Behr.

It’s a new neutral for the new decade (that means it’s time to step aside, greige). Back to Nature feels fresh and invigorating, and pairs well with crisp whites, charcoal greys, warm brass and matte black. Integrating the color into your living spaces invites the outdoors in, creating an airy, verdant environment that instills a sense of calm.
Earlier this summer, we wrote about the release of Behr’s 2020 Color Trends palette, which features 15 colors that fit into three distinct themes. Back to Nature is listed among them, but has since been deemed the top hue for 2020.
“Back To Nature serves as the cornerstone to this collection,” explains Woelfel. “It can work hand in hand with simple or maximal styling, whether your goal is to transform kitchen cabinetry with a new neutral look that feels unique and fresh, or simply make a small space feel more open and airy.”
