When your kitchen — aka the heart of the home — is off-limits due to a renovation, it can make your entire life feel upside-down. To avoid ballooning budgets, expectation letdown, or regrettable (and expensive!) decisions that don’t suit your lifestyle, Livabl caught up with Kate Davidson from Kate + Co. Design Inc. at the National Home Show in Toronto for advice.

“When you’re starting a kitchen renovation, it’s important to think about how you’re going to use the space,” says Davidson. The key is to do your homework long before your tradespeople show up, the appliances get unplugged and you lose running water (and your sanity). With these tips, you’ll be thinking it through like a pro — from lighting, layout and design scheme to budget. The result? A functional and stylish kitchen that works for you — not against you.
