IKEA’s catalogue release date is an unofficial holiday for the design-obsessed. Lucky for us, we were invited to IKEA Canada’s open house to experience the 2019 edition first-hand — a whole two weeks before the catalogue arrives in-store and online.

Within its 294 glossy pages are seven different homes, ranging from a storage-savvy 16-square-metre apartment to an eco-friendly family abode with ample greenery. The catalogue is brimming with brand new products, as well as tried-and-true favorites in fresh colors and with lower price tags.

To celebrate its 75th anniversary, IKEA is bringing back some of its most-loved products from the 1950s to the early 2000s. Flipping to the very back of the catalogue, you’ll find these limited-edition collections, which will be released over the next four months. “They’re not going to last long!” warns IKEA Canada’s Head of Interior Design, Kathy Davey. The EKENÄSET armchair is a replica of a Danish-inspired IKEA design from 1957. Crafted from solid beech or birch, the Mad Men-esque chair features “dense-woven velvet” upholstery, which makes it “really soft and luxurious,” according to Davey.

The ENEBY Bluetooth speaker was another big hit. IKEA describes it as a “discrete and portable speaker with a clear, powerful sound.” The handle can be removed for those who wish to mount the speaker on the wall. “The cover also comes off, it’s all white underneath which provides a really minimalist look,” explains Davey.

Describing the overall aesthetic of this year’s catalogue, Davey says it’s “much more of a Nordic feel,” punctuated by blonde woods and muted pastels. “It’s a lot lighter, a lot more airy.” The BJÖRKSNÄS five-drawer dresser perfectly exemplifies this design direction, complete with rounded edges, soft-closing drawers and trendy leather pulls.

Another product that caught our eye was the cover star BRÖNDEN rug, which is handmade and low pile. The nubby texture and various colors really popped against the GRÖNLID sofa and high-backed VEDBO armchair.
