The design experts at Houzz have peered into a crystal ball scoured their catalogue of more than 15 million interior photos to predict the hottest decor trends of 2018. Houzz users and design professionals shared their top picks, which editor Mitchell Parker laid out in an interview with MyDomaine. Thinking of remodeling your abode in the New Year? You’ll want to keep an eye on these 10 home design trends.

1. Color-popping kitchens

As with any overdone design trend (looking at you, quatrefoil) there’s bound to be a bit of backlash. All-white kitchens are timeless, but the constant cleaning and tone-on-tone aesthetic isn’t for everyone. In 2018, expect to see more painted kitchen islands, warm wood materials and colorful accents.

2. Unconventional sink materials

With copper, bronze and matte black faucets on the rise, it’s only natural that sink materials follow suit. Consider models made with concrete, stone, copper or granite composite to give your kitchen a one-of-a-kind look.

3. Intricate millwork

Move over, shiplap, there’s a new star in town. Wall paneling, ceiling medallions and crown moulding can elevate a space by adding architectural interest. If you’re not ready to revamp your entire home, start with a smaller project such as a fireplace surround or an accent wall.

4. Warm and welcoming neutrals

Neutrals never go out of style, but in 2018 we’ll see an emergence of warmer tones like green-infused gray, caramel brown and bone white. Trust us, a warm color palette is like a hug for your home.

5. Not-your-grandma’s florals

If you’re a frequent Pinterest peruser, you’ve likely stumbled across images of artist Ellie Cashman’s floral wallpapers. The moody, oversized prints seem to have influenced this 2018 trend, which emphasizes scale and color.

6. Concrete decor

Concrete planters and countertops have been ‘a thing’ for a while now, but in the New Year we’ll see even more decor accents, furniture pieces and wall coverings made from the low-cost material. Brutalism is back, baby.

7. Minimal and modern bedrooms

Bedrooms shouldn’t be distracting — in fact, minimally-designed, clutter-free bedrooms encourage better sleep. To catch more ZZZs in 2018, opt for functional furnishings in soothing colors.

8. Statement-making backsplashes

Will subway tile become what beige paint was to the early 2000s? While that remains to be seen, we are certain that ornate backsplashes will be on-trend in 2018. Full-height designs in graphic patterns and eye-catching materials are on our radar.

9. Vintage-inspired light fixtures

What’s old is new again, and that’s especially true of lighting trends. Whether you prefer caged designs, barn lights, beaded chandeliers or retro pendants, there’s something to appease every taste.

10. Trough and bucket sinks

While Fixer Upper may be coming to an end, the modern farmhouse movement certainly isn’t. Trough sinks with two faucets and colored powder coatings will be hugely popular, as will galvanized bucket sinks, which look like something you would have kept in your house if you lived through the Dust Bowl.
