IKEA is best known for its affordable approach to furniture, but its new kitchen system is attracting attention for a different reason. Called KUNGSBACKA, it’s a collaboration with international design studio Form Us With Love, and is entirely made of recycled plastic bottles and reclaimed industrial wood.
“A plastic bottle is not waste, it is a resource. And most importantly, this kitchen proves that these materials can be used for household goods in large scale production,” explains Jonas Petersson, CEO of Form Us With Love, in a press release.

Like most IKEA furniture, KUNGSBACKA is modular, meaning it can be arranged to fit any space. It comes in a matte “anthracite grey” color that was designed to give it the feel of a black T-shirt — “tuned to fit right, practical and still precious.” KUNGSBACKA will have HACKÅS kitchen handles, and IKEA and Form Us With Love expect it to be able to withstand over 25 years of use.

Pricing details have not been released yet, but IKEA and Form Us With Love have said that they did their best to keep costs down — a challenge when using recycled and reclaimed materials to make a new product. “Sustainability should be for everyone, not only for those who can afford it,” says Anna Granath, a product developer at IKEA of Sweden.
The KUNGSBACKA kitchen system will be available starting in February. We can’t wait to see the different ways that people incorporate it into their homes.
