The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is just around the corner, but movie buffs can see their favourite celebrities even sooner by visiting the presentation centre at The Davies Condominiums on Avenue Road. That’s where developer Brandy Lane Homes is hosting an exclusive exhibit of never-before-seen photos by renowned celebrity photographer George Pimentel. The exhibit opened last Wednesday night and runs until 5pm on Sunday, September 18th.
“Brandy Lane is very proud to host this extraordinary exhibit here at The Davies,” said David Hirsh, President at Brandy Lane Homes as he addressed the crowd at Wednesday’s premiere. “What would our lives be without the arts? And what would our lives be without those that devote their lives like George to capture the joy and emotion that the arts bring to us? Our possessions in our lives make us happy but the arts make us truly rich.”
As Canada’s premier celebrity photographer Pimentel has had an impressive career photographing Hollywood’s A-list stars and regularly attends film festivals around the world from TIFF to Cannes and Sundance to Rome. And it all started with one shot.
It was a photograph of Robert De Niro that he took as an amateur photographer that jumpstarted his career and ignited his passion. At the age of 20 he was working in his father’s studio and heard that De Niro was in town for TIFF.
“I knew nothing about celebrity photography or paparazzis,” explained Pimentel. “But I loved movies and as a fan I thought, I’m going to get my dad’s Hasselblad and see if I could get a shot of De Niro.”
He made his way to the Elgin Theatre in downtown Toronto where a security guard mistook him for an official photographer allowing him access to the media area behind the velvet ropes. As he waited nervously, a limousine pulled up and out came Robert DeNiro.
“My heart started racing, the fans started screaming, and I was just shaking,” said Pimentel. “He walked by and I was so nervous, I didn’t even take a photo.”
A publicist from TIFF came out and invited all the photographers inside the theatre. Thinking he had missed his chance to photograph the famous actor, Pimentel packed up his gear and was about to go home.
“As I was collecting my stuff, I looked up and saw De Niro walking back out to greet the fans,” he said. “With all the other photographers already gone, I was the only one there. So as he came out, I took the shot, went back to my father’s dark room, and I said to myself, ‘I’m going to do this for the rest of my life’.”
After taking that famous ‘one shot,’ George embarked on a successful career covering major events including the Oscars and the Golden Globes. He’s met and photographed celebrities from Brad Pitt to Madonna, and his work now appears regularly in publications like People, Rolling Stone, US Weekly and Hello! He’s also the official photographer of choice for the Toronto Film Festival, Junos, CTV, MuchMusic and Toronto Fashion Week.
Located in Summerhill, just north of Toronto’s glamorous Mink Mile, the site of the nine-storey The Davies provides a fitting setting for the exhibit. The luxury residence will house 40 units with open-concept living spaces, private access elevators and exquisite features and finishes.
Residents of The Davies will also have access to an impressive array of on-site amenities including a sleek and sophisticated lobby with concierge, designed by Lukas Design Interiors. Other amenities include a conference room, multi-purpose room, fitness room and a dog wash station
